A council buries old tablets in a landfill site.

Identify one environmental issue this can cause.

[1 mark]
  • ADevices can be repaired and reused
  • BFewer raw materials are needed
  • CMaterials can be recovered for recycling
  • DToxic substances can leak into the soil
Mark scheme
  • D Toxic substances can leak into the soil (1)
  • The only correct answer is D. The correct answer is toxic substances can leak into the soil.
  • A is not correct because repairing and reusing devices is a way of extending their life, not an issue caused by landfill
  • B is not correct because needing fewer raw materials is a benefit of recycling or reuse
  • C is not correct because recovering materials is a benefit of recycling
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

D Toxic substances can leak into the soil

Why: Correct option: this is an environmental issue caused by landfill disposal.

No marks0/1

C Materials can be recovered for recycling

Why: This is a benefit of recycling, not an issue caused by burying devices in landfill.

No marks0/1

A Devices can be repaired and reused

Why: This is a way of reducing e-waste, not an environmental issue caused by landfill.

2Multiple choice1 markE-waste Swap Remove

A company is deciding what to do with its old laptops. It can send them to a landfill site or take them to a recycling centre.

Identify the reason why taking the old laptops to a recycling centre is better for the environment than sending them to a landfill site.

[1 mark]
  • AIt allows the old laptops to be repaired and reused
  • BIt reduces the energy the old laptops consume
  • CIt reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill
  • DIt means fewer new laptops are manufactured
Mark scheme
  • C It reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill (1)
  • The only correct answer is C. The correct answer is It reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill.
  • A is not correct because repairing and reusing old laptops is reuse, not recycling
  • B is not correct because recycling an old laptop does not change the energy it uses when it is in use
  • D is not correct because recycling an old laptop does not reduce the number of new laptops that are manufactured
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

C It reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill

Why: Correct option: recycling keeps the old laptops out of landfill.

No marks0/1

A It allows the old laptops to be repaired and reused

Why: Near miss: repairing and reusing devices is reuse, not recycling, so it earns no mark.

No marks0/1

B It reduces the energy the old laptops consume

Why: Misconception: confuses disposal of a device with its energy consumption during use.

3Multiple choice1 markManufacturing Technology Swap Remove
[1 mark]
  • Afactory manufactures digital devices. Identify one way that this manufacturing harms the environment. A Devices are buried in landfill
  • BDevices are left on standby
  • CDevices are replaced too often
  • DFossil fuels are burned to power factories
Mark scheme
  • D Fossil fuels are burned to power factories (1)
  • The only correct answer is D. The correct answer is fossil fuels are burned to power factories.
  • A is not correct because burying devices in landfill is an issue with disposal
  • B is not correct because leaving devices on standby is an issue with energy consumption during use
  • C is not correct because replacing devices too often is an issue with the replacement cycle
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

D Fossil fuels are burned to power factories

Why: Correct: burning fossil fuels to power factories is an environmental issue of manufacture (1).

No marks0/1

A Devices are buried in landfill

Why: Near miss but no mark: landfill is an issue with disposal, not with manufacture.

No marks0/1

C Devices are replaced too often

Why: No mark: this is about the replacement cycle, not about the manufacturing process.

4Multiple choice1 markManufacturing Technology Swap Remove

Raw materials used to make digital devices are obtained by mining.

Identify one environmental impact of mining raw materials for digital devices.

[1 mark]
  • AE-waste in landfill
  • BLand contamination
  • CPlanned obsolescence
  • DReplacement cycle
Mark scheme
  • B Land contamination (1)
  • The only correct answer is B. The correct answer is land contamination.
  • A is not correct because e-waste in landfill is an impact of disposing of a device, not of mining raw materials
  • C is not correct because planned obsolescence is designing products to fail, which is about product lifetime, not an impact of mining raw materials
  • D is not correct because a replacement cycle is how often devices are replaced, not an environmental impact of mining raw materials
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

B Land contamination

Why: Correct option credited (1): mining raw materials can contaminate land.

No marks0/1

C Planned obsolescence

Why: Near miss, no mark: planned obsolescence is about product lifetime, not an impact of mining raw materials.

No marks0/1

A E-waste in landfill

Why: No mark: e-waste is an impact of disposal, not of mining raw materials, so this is a phase confusion.

5Multiple choice1 markManufacturing Technology Swap Remove

A business is reviewing how much energy its computers use and how often it replaces them.

Identify one way the business can reduce the energy consumption of its computers.

[1 mark]
  • ATurn off power saving mode
  • BLeave computers switched on overnight so updates can install
  • CReplace computers every year
  • DSet computers to standby when unused
Mark scheme
  • D Set computers to standby when unused (1)
  • The only correct answer is D. The correct answer is set computers to standby when unused.
  • A is not correct because turning off power saving mode lets a computer use more energy when it is not being used
  • B is not correct because a computer left switched on overnight still uses energy while it installs updates
  • C is not correct because replacing computers every year shortens the replacement cycle, so more energy is used to manufacture the new devices
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

D Set computers to standby when unused

Why: Correct option: standby reduces the energy a computer uses when it is not in use (1).

No marks0/1

A Turn off power saving mode

Why: Near miss but no mark: turning off power saving mode lets the computer use more energy when it is not being used.

No marks0/1

C Replace computers every year

Why: No mark: frequent replacement shortens the replacement cycle and uses more energy in manufacturing, rather than reducing energy consumption.

6Multiple choice1 markManufacturing Technology Swap Remove

Identify the term for how often digital devices are replaced.

[1 mark]
  • ADisposal
  • BEnergy consumption
  • CManufacture
  • DReplacement cycle
Mark scheme
  • D Replacement cycle (1)
  • The only correct answer is D. The correct answer is replacement cycle.
  • A is not correct because disposal is getting rid of devices at the end of their life
  • B is not correct because energy consumption is the amount of energy devices use
  • C is not correct because manufacture is making devices
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

D Replacement cycle

Why: Correct: replacement cycle is the term for how often digital devices are replaced (1).

No marks0/1

A Disposal

Why: No mark: disposal is a related term about getting rid of devices at end of life, not how often devices are replaced.

No marks0/1

B Energy consumption

Why: No mark: energy consumption is a different environmental issue and does not mean how often devices are replaced.

7Short recall2 marksE-waste Swap Remove

Digital devices can be disposed of in several ways.

State two methods that can be used to dispose of digital devices.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Landfill (1)
  • Incineration (1)
  • Recycling (1)
  • Reuse, e.g. give the device to someone else/sell it/donate it to charity (1)
  • Return the device to the manufacturer/retailer (1)

Allow burning at a waste incineration plant for incineration.

Allow selling the device and donating it to charity as reuse, but award only one mark if a candidate gives more than one of these.

Do not accept throw it away/put it in the bin, as no method is named.

Do not accept empty the recycle bin, as this deletes files on a computer and does not dispose of the device.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

They can be sent to landfill or taken to a recycling centre.

Why: Two named methods: landfill (1) and recycling (1).

Some marks1/2

They can be recycled or just put in the bin.

Why: Recycling is a named method (1); 'put in the bin' does not name a method, so no second mark.

No marks0/2

You can delete the files from the device and then empty the recycle bin on your computer.

Why: Deleting files and emptying the computer's recycle bin are not methods of disposing of a device; no creditworthy point.

8Short recall2 marksManufacturing Technology Swap Remove

Digital devices are replaced from time to time.

State two reasons why a digital device might be replaced.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • New software/updates need more powerful hardware (1)
  • Newer model has better features/performance (1)
  • A component/battery has failed/stopped working (1)
  • The device is damaged/broken/lost/stolen (1)
  • The manufacturer no longer provides updates/support for the device (1)
  • Planned obsolescence / the device is designed to fail after a set time (1)

Allow 'the device has become too slow' if it is linked to new software/apps or a hardware upgrade.

Do not accept 'it is too slow' on its own.

Do not accept 'it is old' / 'to get a newer one' on its own.

Do not accept 'to recycle it' / 'to dispose of it' (these happen after replacement, they are not reasons for it).

The two reasons must be different. Do not award a second mark for repeating a reason already given, e.g. 'the screen is cracked' and 'it is damaged'.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The battery no longer holds a charge and the latest apps need a faster processor.

Why: Battery has failed (1) and new software needs more powerful hardware (1). Two distinct reasons.

Some marks1/2

The screen is cracked and it is old.

Why: Device is damaged (1). 'It is old' on its own is not accepted, so no second mark.

No marks0/2

It is old and I want to recycle it.

Why: 'It is old' on its own is not accepted, and 'to recycle it' is not a reason for replacing a device, so no marks.

9Describe2 marksE-waste Swap Remove

E-waste can be disposed of by burning.

Describe one environmental issue caused by burning e-waste.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Burning releases toxic gases/fumes/harmful chemicals (1) which pollute the air/can cause acid rain (1)
  • Burning the plastic/insulation on cables releases harmful chemicals (1) which contaminate the ground/soil/water (1)
  • Burning leaves ash/residue containing heavy metals (1) which contaminate the ground/soil/groundwater (1)

Allow 'harmful chemicals'/'pollutants'/'toxic fumes' for the point mark.

Responses must relate to burning e-waste.

Do not accept answers about harm to the health/safety of workers.

Do not accept answers that describe a benefit, such as recovering/reusing the metals or generating energy.

Do not accept answers about e-waste in landfill/leaching from landfill, or a generic statement such as 'it pollutes the environment' with no mechanism described.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Burning the cables releases toxic fumes into the air, which can cause acid rain.

Why: Toxic fumes point (1) linked to air pollution/acid rain (1).

Some marks1/2

Burning the plastic releases harmful chemicals.

Why: Harmful chemicals accepted as the point (1) but does not say where they go or what they harm.

No marks0/2

The workers can get burned by the fires, which is dangerous.

Why: Harm to workers is health and safety, not an environmental issue; not accepted.

10Explain2 marksManufacturing Technology Swap Remove

A computer case is made from plastic.

Explain one environmental issue caused by making this plastic.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • Making plastic releases carbon dioxide/CO2 into the atmosphere (1) because large amounts of energy/fossil fuels are used to make it (1)
  • Making plastic uses up/depletes a finite/non-renewable resource such as oil (1) because plastic is made from oil (1)
  • Making plastic can pollute land/water (1) because harmful waste/chemicals are produced/released during manufacture (1)
  • Making plastic can damage habitats/land (1) because oil has to be extracted to make the plastic (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow the point and linked reason in either order.

Do not accept 'plastic is bad for the environment' or 'plastic causes pollution' on its own without saying how.

Do not accept 'making plastic uses energy' on its own; it must be linked to an environmental effect such as releasing CO2/contributing to global warming.

Do not accept 'plastic is non-renewable' as a point; it is the oil used to make plastic that is non-renewable.

Do not accept 'oil is non-renewable' without saying it is used up/depleted/will run out.

Do not accept answers about throwing away/disposing of the computer case or recycling it at the end of its life.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Making plastic uses large amounts of energy, which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Why: Environmental effect (1) linked to energy use in manufacture (1).

Some marks1/2

Making plastic releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Why: Identifies an environmental effect (1) but gives no linked reason such as energy use/fossil fuels.

No marks0/2

Plastic is non-renewable, so it cannot be recycled.

Why: Misconception that plastic itself is non-renewable; recycling is a disposal issue, not caused by making the plastic. No creditworthy point.
