1Multiple choice1 markStored Program Computers Swap Remove

Identify the bus that carries addresses in one direction only, from the CPU to main memory.

[1 mark]
  • AAddress bus
  • BControl bus
  • CData bus
  • DSystem bus
Mark scheme
  • A Address bus (1)
  • The only correct answer is A. The correct answer is address bus. Do not accept 'address' on its own.
  • B is not correct because the control bus carries control signals in both directions between the CPU and other components
  • C is not correct because the data bus carries data in both directions between the CPU and main memory
  • D is not correct because the system bus is the collection of all three buses
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

A Address bus

Why: Correct option: the address bus carries addresses in one direction only, from the CPU to main memory (1).

No marks0/1

C Data bus

Why: The data bus carries data in both directions, so it is not the bus that carries addresses in one direction only from the CPU to main memory; no creditworthy point.

No marks0/1

B Control bus

Why: The control bus carries control signals in both directions, not addresses in one direction only; this is the common control/address bus confusion, so no mark.

2Short recall2 marksSecondary Memory Swap Remove

A computer uses secondary storage to keep programs and data.

Give two examples of secondary storage devices that store data using magnetic media.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Hard disk drive/HDD (1)
  • External/portable hard disk drive (1)
  • Magnetic tape drive (1)
  • Magnetic tape (1)

Allow a named device or the storage media type, e.g. hard disk/hard disc for hard disk drive, tape for magnetic tape

Allow floppy disk/floppy disk drive

Do not accept solid state devices (SSD, USB flash drive/memory stick, SD card/memory card) or optical media (CD/DVD/Blu-ray) as these do not store data using magnetism

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Hard disk drive and magnetic tape

Why: Hard disk drive (1) and magnetic tape (1) are both magnetic secondary storage, so both marks are awarded.

Some marks1/2

Hard disk drive and SD card

Why: Hard disk drive is magnetic (1); an SD card is solid state, not magnetic, so the second mark is not awarded.

No marks0/2

CD and DVD

Why: Both are optical media, which the mark scheme says not to accept, so no marks are awarded.

3Describe2 marksEmbedded Systems Swap Remove

A drone is controlled by an embedded system.

Describe the purpose of the embedded system in the drone.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • It controls the motors/rotors (1) so that the drone can take off, hover, turn and land (1)
  • It keeps the drone stable/level automatically (1) by taking readings from a sensor (accelerometer/gyroscope/GPS) (1)
  • It receives signals from the remote control (1) and changes the speed of the motors to steer the drone (1)
  • It monitors the battery level (1) and brings the drone back to the ground before the battery runs out (1)

The development must relate to the function given in the point.

Accept a named function that the embedded system controls, e.g. 'it keeps the drone level', as the first mark (1).

Award the second mark only when the development gives a specific outcome or detail of that function, e.g. 'so that the drone can take off, hover, turn and land' or 'by changing the motor speeds to keep it level'.

Do not award the second mark for a generic outcome such as 'so it works', 'so it can fly' or 'so the drone moves'.

A bare 'it controls the motors so it can fly' therefore earns the first mark only.

Allow any other specific function of a drone that is carried out by the embedded system.

Do not accept 'it flies the drone' / 'it is the drone's brain' / 'it makes the drone work' without a named function being controlled.

Do not accept answers that describe the user or the remote control flying the drone with no function carried out by the embedded system.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It keeps the drone level while it is in the air by reading the accelerometer and changing the speed of the motors.

Why: Named function of the embedded system, keeping the drone level (1), developed with the sensor reading and motor speed changes that achieve it (1).

Some marks1/2

It controls the motors of the drone.

Why: First mark only (1) for naming a function the embedded system controls, with no linked outcome or detail to earn the second mark.

No marks0/2

It is the brain of the drone and makes the drone work.

Why: Vague phrase with no named function being controlled, which the mark scheme's 'Do not accept' line rules out.

4Explain2 marksSecondary Memory Swap Remove

A hard disk drive stores data on a spinning magnetic platter.

Explain how data is read from a magnetic hard disk.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • The read/write head moves over the surface of the platter (1) and detects whether each area of the disk is magnetised (1)
  • The platter spins/rotates (1) so the read/write head can pass over the whole surface/tracks of the disk (1)
  • The pattern of magnetised and non-magnetised areas detected by the read/write head (1) is read as binary 1s and 0s (1)
  • The drive head detects the direction of magnetisation of each area (1) so the data can be read as binary (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow one mark for stating that data is read magnetically / that the read/write head detects the magnetisation of the disk without a linked reason.

Do not accept answers that describe how data is written to the disk, such as the head magnetising the platter, rather than how it is read.

Do not accept 'a laser reads the pits and lands' - this describes optical storage, not magnetic storage.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The platter rotates so the read/write head passes over the whole surface of the disk and it detects whether each area is magnetised or not. The pattern of magnetised areas is then read as 1s and 0s.

Why: Linked point (1) rotation of the platter with reason (1) the head reaches the whole surface, and the second line about magnetised areas is also present.

Some marks1/2

The read/write head detects the magnetic charges on the disk.

Why: Allow line (1): states the head detects the magnetisation of the disk, but gives no linked reason (e.g. the platter rotating so the head covers the whole surface), so only one mark.

No marks0/2

A laser shines onto the disk and reads the pits and lands, then the data is sent to the CPU.

Why: Describes optical storage. Do not accept 'a laser reads the pits and lands' - a magnetic disk is read by a head detecting magnetisation.
