1Short recall2 marksStored Program Computers Swap Remove

The central processing unit (CPU) contains an arithmetic logic unit (ALU).

State two types of operation carried out by the ALU.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • An arithmetic operation, e.g. addition/subtraction/multiplication/division (1)
  • A logical operation, e.g. comparing two values (is A > B?) / using AND, OR, NOT (1)

Do not accept decoding instructions, fetching instructions or controlling the timing of the CPU, as these are carried out by the control unit.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It carries out arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction, and logical operations such as comparing two values to see if one is greater than the other.

Why: Arithmetic operation (1) and logical operation (1).

Some marks1/2

It adds numbers together and works out the result.

Why: Arithmetic operation, addition (1). No logical operation.

No marks0/2

It decodes the instructions that have been fetched from main memory.

Why: Decoding and fetching are the control unit's role; the mark scheme's do-not-accept line covers this.

2Describe2 marksUtility Software Swap Remove

A computer can lose power while a file is being saved.

Describe what file repair software does.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Attempts to repair/rebuild the corrupted file (1) so that it can be opened by its program again (1)
  • Recovers/retrieves the parts of the file that can still be read (1) so that the user does not lose all of the data in the file (1)
  • Reconstructs the file from data held in other parts of the disk (1) because part of the file/the disk is corrupted (1)
  • Saves a new/repaired copy of the file (1) as some of the data in it may not be recoverable (1)

Do not accept 'it repairs the file' on its own, as this repeats the question.

Do not accept responses about restoring a backup/previous version of the file, as this is backup software.

Do not accept responses about scanning for or removing malware.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It recovers the parts of the file that can still be read (1) so that the user does not lose everything that was saved in it (1).

Why: The point (1) and a linked development giving the effect (1).

Some marks1/2

It rebuilds the damaged file from other parts of the disk.

Why: A valid point is made (1) but there is no development of what this achieves, so the second mark is not awarded.

No marks0/2

It restores the last backup of the file so the user gets the data back.

Why: This describes backup software, which the mark scheme does not accept for this question.

3Explain2 marksTopologies Swap Remove

A mesh topology has many connections between devices.

Explain one reason why a mesh topology is resilient.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • There is no single point of failure (1) because there is no central device that all the other devices depend on (1)
  • If one device/connection fails, the network can still communicate/work (1) because data can be sent along another route between devices (1)
  • A faulty device/connection can be bypassed (1) because each device is connected to more than one other device (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow one mark for a correct point without a linked reason.

Allow 'the network can still communicate/work' as the outcome point and 'if one cable/connection breaks' as the failure point.

Allow 'reliable'/'robust' only when expanded with a reason, such as multiple routes or no single point of failure.

Do not accept 'it has many connections' on its own without saying why this makes the network resilient.

Do not accept 'mesh is faster' or 'data is backed up' as these do not explain resilience.

Do not accept 'it uses a central switch/device' as part of the explanation.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

There is no single point of failure (1) because each device is connected to several others, so data can take another route if one connection fails (1).

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1): no single point of failure is explained by multiple connections and alternative routes.

Some marks1/2

If one device fails, the network still works.

Why: Awarded 1 mark for the correct outcome point; no linked reason about multiple routes or connections is given.

No marks0/2

It is resilient because a central switch redirects data around a broken cable.

Why: No credit: the mark scheme does not accept a central switch in a mesh explanation, and no valid point about multiple routes is given.
