1Multiple choice1 markSecondary Memory Swap Remove

A company stores films on optical media.

Identify the optical storage medium that can store the most data.

[1 mark]
  • ABlu-ray Disc
  • BCD
  • CDVD
  • DMagnetic tape
Mark scheme
  • A Blu-ray Disc (1)
  • The only correct answer is A. The correct answer is Blu-ray Disc.
  • B is not correct because a CD stores less data than a Blu-ray Disc, up to about 700 MB
  • C is not correct because a DVD stores less data than a Blu-ray Disc, up to about 4.7 GB (single-layer) or 8.4 GB (dual-layer)
  • D is not correct because magnetic tape is not an optical storage medium
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

A Blu-ray Disc

Why: Correct option (1): a Blu-ray Disc has the greatest capacity of the optical media.

No marks0/1

C DVD

Why: Near miss scoring 0: a DVD is optical but stores less than a Blu-ray Disc (mark scheme line C). Only A is credited.

No marks0/1

D Magnetic tape

Why: Misconception scoring 0: candidates pick tape for its large capacity but magnetic tape is not an optical storage medium (mark scheme line D).

2Short recall2 marksEmbedded Systems Swap Remove

An embedded system is a computer system built into another device to perform a specific function.

Give two examples of devices that contain an embedded system.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Microwave (oven) (1)
  • Washing machine (1)
  • Dishwasher (1)
  • Digital camera (1)
  • Satellite navigation/satnav system (1)
  • Traffic light(s) (1)
  • Central heating controller/thermostat (1)
  • Digital watch/fitness tracker (1)
  • Vending machine (1)
  • Car (as it contains embedded systems) (1)

Allow any other device that contains an embedded system.

Do not accept general purpose devices such as a laptop, desktop computer, tablet or smartphone (these can run many different programs).

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

A microwave oven and a washing machine.

Why: Two creditworthy devices, a microwave oven (1) and a washing machine (1).

Some marks1/2

A dishwasher and a laptop computer.

Why: Dishwasher credited (1); laptop is a general purpose device, so not accepted.

No marks0/2

A desktop computer and a smartphone.

Why: Both are general purpose devices, so neither earns a mark.

3Explain2 marksStored Program Computers Swap Remove

Computers use the von Neumann stored program concept.

Explain one benefit of storing program instructions in main memory.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • A new program can be loaded/changed without rewiring/reconfiguring the computer (1) because the instructions are held in main memory and can be replaced (by loading a different program) (1)
  • Different programs can be run on the same computer (1) because the program instructions are stored in RAM/main memory (1)
  • The CPU can fetch instructions automatically (1) so an operator is not needed to enter each instruction by hand (1)
  • Instructions can be stored and run in sequence (1) because the CPU reads the next instruction from main memory (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow a benefit stated as an example, e.g. a program can be run as soon as it is loaded (1), with a linked reason (1)

Do not accept a statement that only describes storing or loading, e.g. 'programs can be loaded into memory', without a benefit and a linked reason.

Do not accept 'it is faster' / RAM is quicker to access than secondary storage / RAM is closer to the CPU (1 for nothing): this describes the speed of RAM, not a benefit of storing program instructions in main memory.

Do not accept answers about secondary storage holding programs, e.g. 'the program is kept on the hard drive when the computer is turned off', as this is a property of secondary storage, not of the stored program concept.

Ignore references to the fetch-decode-execute cycle that are not linked to a benefit.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

A new program can be loaded without changing the hardware because the instructions are held in main memory and can be replaced

Why: Linked benefit (1) and linked reason (1), matching the first mark scheme line.

Some marks1/2

Different programs can be run on the same computer.

Why: Valid benefit stated (1) but no linked reason is given, so the second mark is not awarded.

No marks0/2

It is faster because RAM is closer to the CPU.

Why: A speed answer about RAM, which the mark scheme's 'Do not accept' line rules out, so no creditworthy point and no linked reason.
