1Multiple choice1 markSecondary Memory Swap Remove

A computer stores files on a hard disk drive.

A computer stores files on a hard disk drive.

Identify what the drive uses to read and write data.

[1 mark]
  • AA drive head that moves over the spinning platters
  • BA laser that measures reflected light
  • CA memory chip that traps electric charges
  • DA pit and land pattern burnt onto the surface
Mark scheme
  • A A drive head that moves over the spinning platters (1)
  • The only correct answer is A. The correct answer is a drive head.
  • B is not correct because a laser that measures reflected light is used by optical media such as a CD or Blu-ray Disc
  • C is not correct because trapping electric charges is how solid state (flash) storage stores data
  • D is not correct because pits and lands are burnt or pressed onto optical media, not onto a hard disk drive
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

A A drive head that moves over the spinning platters

Why: Correct option (1): a hard disk drive uses a drive head that moves over the spinning platters to read and write data.

No marks0/1

D A pit and land pattern burnt onto the surface

Why: Near miss scoring 0: pits and lands are an optical feature, as line D of the mark scheme says. Only A is credited.

No marks0/1

C A memory chip that traps electric charges

Why: Misconception scoring 0: this confuses a hard disk drive with solid state storage, which stores data as trapped electric charges (line C).

2Describe2 marksSecondary Memory Swap Remove

Computers use secondary storage.

Describe the role of secondary storage.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Stores programs (including the operating system) and data that are not currently in use (1) so that they can be loaded into RAM/main memory when needed (1)
  • Keeps files/programs/data when the power is turned off (1) which happens because it is non-volatile (1)
  • Stores files/data for backup or archiving (1) so that they can be recovered if the originals are lost/corrupted (1)

A correct role on its own earns one mark; the second mark requires a linked development.

Accept either order if both the role and the link are given.

Do not accept 'it is non-volatile' on its own, unless it is linked to keeping data when the power is turned off.

Do not accept answers that only name a storage type (magnetic, optical, solid state) without describing a role.

Do not accept responses that describe primary storage/RAM, e.g. storing the data/instructions the CPU is currently working on, or that secondary storage makes the computer run faster.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Secondary storage stores programs and data that are not currently in use so that they can be loaded into RAM when they are needed.

Why: Role point (1) linked to loading into RAM when needed (1).

Some marks1/2

It stores files and programs that are not currently in use.

Why: Correct role on its own earns one mark (1); no linked development, so the second mark is not awarded.

No marks0/2

It holds the data and instructions the CPU is working on so the computer runs faster.

Why: Describes primary storage/RAM and a speed benefit, which the mark scheme does not accept; no role of secondary storage is given.

3Explain2 marksFetch Decode Execute Cycle Swap Remove

The control unit is part of the CPU.

Explain the role of the control unit in the fetch-decode-execute cycle.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • Decodes/interprets/translates the instruction (1) to work out what the instruction is/what operation is required (1)
  • Sends control signals to the other components (1) so that the correct component carries out the instruction (1), e.g. the ALU/main memory
  • Controls the fetch of the instruction from main memory (1) because the address of the next instruction is sent via the address bus (1)
  • Controls the fetch of the next instruction from main memory (1) by sending a control signal/read signal to main memory (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

For the decode point, 'decodes the instruction' alone gains 1 mark; a second mark needs the purpose of decoding, i.e. working out what the instruction is/what operation is required.

Do not accept 'it controls the CPU' on its own, without naming a task in the cycle.

Do not accept 'it fetches the instruction from memory' on its own, as this describes the fetch step rather than the control unit's role; credit only if linked to controlling/signalling the fetch.

Do not accept carrying out arithmetic/logical operations, as these are carried out by the ALU, or holding the address of the next instruction, as this is the program counter.

Do not accept storing the instruction in a register (e.g. MAR/MDR), as this is not the role of the control unit.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The control unit decodes each instruction, working out what it means, so that the CPU knows which component should carry it out.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1): decodes/interprets the instruction, and works out what it is/what operation is required.

Some marks1/2

It decodes the instruction that has been fetched from main memory.

Why: Decode point only (1); it does not explain the purpose of decoding, i.e. working out what the instruction is/what operation is required.

No marks0/2

It adds the two numbers together and stores the result in a register.

Why: Misconception: arithmetic is carried out by the ALU, which the mark scheme's Do not accept line covers.
