1Describe2 marksWired Connections Swap Remove

A school connects its desktop computers to the network using Ethernet cables.

Describe one way that using a wired connection can give a faster transfer of data than a wireless connection.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • (Ethernet) cables are not affected by interference from other devices (1) so data is transferred at a consistent/steady speed (1)
  • Each device has its own cable to the switch (1) so the full bandwidth is available to that device and speeds do not drop as more users join (1)
  • Fibre optic cable has a higher bandwidth than a wireless link (1) so more data can be sent along the cable each second (1)
  • The cable gives a direct/physical path to the switch (1) so data is less likely to be lost and resent, which would slow the transfer (1)

Do not accept responses about security, reliability or users being unable to move around, as these are not about speed.

Do not accept answers that only say a wired/cable connection is faster, or that fibre is faster, without saying why.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The cable is not affected by interference from other devices such as other networks or microwaves so the data is sent at a steady speed instead of slowing down.

Why: Point that the cable is not affected by interference (1) linked to a consistent data transfer speed (1).

Some marks1/2

Ethernet cables are not affected by interference.

Why: Gives the first point of a linked pair (1) but does not develop it to say how this makes the transfer faster.

No marks0/2

A wired connection is faster because the data travels down a cable and not through the air.

Why: Repeats the question (wired is faster) with no reason, which the mark scheme's final line says is not accepted.

2Explain2 marksThe Internet Swap Remove

Routers on the internet choose a route for each packet.

Explain one benefit of a router being able to choose a different route for a packet.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • Data can avoid a busy/congested link (1) because the router can choose another path (1)
  • Data can still arrive if a link fails (1) because the router sends it another way (1)
  • Data can take the shortest/fastest path (1) because the router compares the routes and chooses the one with the fewest hops/least traffic (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow other valid benefits with a linked reason, e.g. traffic can be shared across routes/load balanced (1) because the router can send some packets by another path (1)

Do not accept 'the route is always the same' as this is not a benefit of choosing a route.

Do not accept 'routers are fast' or 'packets are sent faster' on its own: the reason must say how the route is chosen, e.g. avoiding congestion or using a routing table.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

If one route is busy, the data can still get there because the router can choose a different path.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1): a different path avoids the busy route.

Some marks1/2

It can choose the fastest route because routers are quick.

Why: Point (1) for choosing the fastest route, but 'routers are quick' is a speed statement that does not say how the route is chosen, so it does not earn the second mark.

No marks0/2

It means more devices can connect to the internet.

Why: No link to choosing a route for a packet; does not answer the question.

3Explain2 marksAddressing Swap Remove

Routers forward data across the internet.

Explain how a router uses the destination IP address of a packet to send the packet towards its destination.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • The router reads/checks the destination (IP) address in the packet (1) so it can forward/send the packet towards that address/destination (1)
  • The router looks up/compares the destination (IP) address (1) to choose the route/next network/next router for the packet (1)
  • The router uses the destination (IP) address to choose/select the outgoing connection/network (1) so the packet is sent one step closer to its destination (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not accept a restatement of the question, such as 'the router uses the IP address to forward the packet', without saying how the address is used, e.g. checking the destination address or choosing the route/next network.

Do not accept answers that say the router gives/adds an IP address to the packet, or that the router uses a MAC address instead of the destination IP address.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The router checks the destination IP address in the packet and sends the packet out on the route/network that leads towards that address.

Why: Point (1): the router checks the destination IP address; linked reason (1): this is used to send the packet towards that destination.

Some marks1/2

The router checks the destination IP address in the packet.

Why: Point (1): the router checks the destination IP address; no linked reason is given, so only the first mark.

No marks0/2

It adds an IP address to the packet so the packet knows where to go.

Why: Misconception: the router does not add an IP address to the packet; the mark scheme says not to accept this, so no marks.
