1Multiple choice1 markProtocols & Layers Swap Remove

The TCP/IP model is made up of four layers.

Identify the layer that is responsible for routing packets.

[1 mark]
  • AApplication
  • BInternet
  • CLink
  • DTransport
Mark scheme
  • B Internet (1)
  • The only correct answer is B. The correct answer is Internet.
  • A is not correct because the application layer creates data for applications such as web browsers and does not route packets
  • C is not correct because the link layer sends data over physical hardware using MAC addresses and does not route packets
  • D is not correct because the transport layer sets up the connection between two computers and reassembles the packets
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

B Internet

Why: The internet layer is responsible for routing packets (1).

No marks0/1

A Application

Why: The application layer creates data for applications such as web browsers and does not route packets (0).

No marks0/1

C Link

Why: Confuses the link layer with the internet layer: the link layer sends data over physical hardware using MAC addresses and does not route packets (0).

2Describe2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

A family uses a wireless network at home.

Describe how interference can affect the performance of a wireless network.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Other electrical/radio devices nearby (1) interfere with the wireless signal so data is corrupted (1)
  • Interference corrupts data (1) so the data has to be resent, which increases latency/slows the transfer (1)
  • Interference reduces the strength of the signal received (1) which lowers the data transfer rate the connection can support (1)
  • Interference makes the connection drop (1) so data transfer stops/devices have to reconnect (1)

Do not accept responses that only name a device (microwave, phone) without saying how it affects the network.

Do not accept responses that only state the network becomes slower without saying what causes the interference or how it affects the data.

Do not accept responses about wired connections or cables.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Other electrical devices nearby can interfere with the wireless signal and corrupt data, so the data has to be resent and transfers are slower.

Why: Linked point: other electrical devices interfere and corrupt data (1), developed by the data being resent, which slows the transfer (1).

Some marks1/2

Other electrical devices nearby can interfere with the wireless signal.

Why: Cause given: other electrical devices interfere with the signal (1), but no development of how this affects the data or performance.

No marks0/2

Interference happens when the wireless cable is damaged by other cables.

Why: Misconception about cables; the mark scheme does not accept responses about wired connections or cables.

3Describe2 marksAddressing Swap Remove

A laptop is used at home and then taken on holiday.

Describe how the laptop's IP address can change.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • The IP address belongs to the network/router the device is connected to (1) so a different network/router gives it a new address (1)
  • Home routers may use dynamic IP addresses (1) which can change when the router reconnects (1)
  • The ISP assigns the IP address (1) and may give a different one at a new location/connection (1)

Do not accept answers that only say the laptop has moved.

Do not accept the MAC address changes.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The IP address is assigned by the router on the network it connects to, so when the laptop joins a different network on holiday it is given a new address.

Why: Linked point (1): IP address belongs to the connected network/router; development (1): a different network gives it a new address.

Some marks1/2

The IP address can change because it is dynamic.

Why: Point only (1): home routers may use dynamic IP addresses; the linked development about reconnecting is missing.

No marks0/2

The laptop's MAC address changes when it connects to a different network, so its IP address changes too.

Why: No creditworthy point: says the MAC address changes, which the mark scheme says not to accept.
