1Multiple choice1 markProtocols & Layers Swap Remove

The TCP/IP model is made up of four layers.

Identify the layer that is responsible for routing packets.

[1 mark]
  • AApplication
  • BInternet
  • CLink
  • DTransport
Mark scheme
  • B Internet (1)
  • The only correct answer is B. The correct answer is Internet.
  • A is not correct because the application layer creates data for applications such as web browsers and does not route packets
  • C is not correct because the link layer sends data over physical hardware using MAC addresses and does not route packets
  • D is not correct because the transport layer sets up the connection between two computers and reassembles the packets
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

B Internet

Why: The internet layer is responsible for routing packets (1).

No marks0/1

A Application

Why: The application layer creates data for applications such as web browsers and does not route packets (0).

No marks0/1

C Link

Why: Confuses the link layer with the internet layer: the link layer sends data over physical hardware using MAC addresses and does not route packets (0).

2Short recall2 marksWired Connections Swap Remove

A company can choose between two wired connections. Connection B has a higher bandwidth than connection A.

Give two benefits to the company of choosing connection B.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Files/data download/upload more quickly (1)
  • More employees can use the connection at the same time without it slowing down (1)
  • Web pages/streamed video load more quickly with less buffering (1)
  • Video calls/conferencing run at a higher quality (1)
  • Updates/backups can be completed in less time (1)

Allow 'multiple users' or 'more devices' for the shared-use point

Allow 'video streams more quickly' or 'less buffering' on their own

Do not accept lower latency, as a higher bandwidth does not reduce latency

Do not accept 'more data can be transferred per second' or 'a bigger bandwidth', as these repeat what bandwidth is

Do not accept 'more reliable' on its own, as a higher bandwidth does not make a wired connection more reliable

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Files will download more quickly, and more employees can use the internet at the same time without the connection slowing down.

Why: Files download more quickly (1) and more users without slowdown (1).

Some marks1/2

Web pages will load faster and the connection will have a longer range.

Why: Web pages load faster (1); the range of a connection is not increased by bandwidth, so that point is not credited.

No marks0/2

The connection will be more reliable because it has a bigger bandwidth.

Why: 'More reliable' is not credited on its own and 'bigger bandwidth' repeats the question, so no marks.

3Describe2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

A network can use wired connections or wireless connections.

Describe why a wireless connection can have a higher latency than a wired connection.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Interference from other devices corrupts the wireless signal (1) so the data has to be resent, which increases the delay (1)
  • Devices on a wireless network take turns to use the same channel/frequency (1) so a device may have to wait for the channel to be free before it can transmit, which adds to the delay (1)
  • Data on a wireless connection must pass through the access point to reach the wired network (1) so the extra processing/conversion at the access point adds a delay (1)

Do not accept responses that only state that a wireless connection is slower/less reliable than a wired connection, without explaining how this adds latency.

Do not accept 'data is sent through the air' on its own, as this does not explain why latency is higher.

Do not accept responses about bandwidth or speed on their own.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Interference from other devices can corrupt the wireless signal, so the data has to be resent, which increases the delay.

Why: Linked point: interference corrupts the signal (1), developed by the delay caused by resending the data (1).

Some marks1/2

Wireless signals can be corrupted by interference from other devices.

Why: The point that interference corrupts the wireless signal (1) is given, but there is no development of how this leads to a delay.

No marks0/2

Wireless is slower than a wired connection, so it has a higher latency.

Why: Only states that wireless is slower, without explaining how this adds latency, so it is not accepted.
