1Multiple choice1 markProtocols & Layers Swap Remove

The TCP/IP model is made up of four layers.

Identify the layer that is responsible for routing packets.

[1 mark]
  • AApplication
  • BInternet
  • CLink
  • DTransport
Mark scheme
  • B Internet (1)
  • The only correct answer is B. The correct answer is Internet.
  • A is not correct because the application layer creates data for applications such as web browsers and does not route packets
  • C is not correct because the link layer sends data over physical hardware using MAC addresses and does not route packets
  • D is not correct because the transport layer sets up the connection between two computers and reassembles the packets
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

B Internet

Why: The internet layer is responsible for routing packets (1).

No marks0/1

A Application

Why: The application layer creates data for applications such as web browsers and does not route packets (0).

No marks0/1

C Link

Why: Confuses the link layer with the internet layer: the link layer sends data over physical hardware using MAC addresses and does not route packets (0).

2Short recall1 markLANs & WANs Swap Remove

A school's computers are connected in a local area network (LAN). The internet connects computers across the world.

State the type of network that the internet is an example of.

[1 mark]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for:

  • WAN/Wide Area Network (1)

Allow wide area network, WAN network, and minor spelling errors where the meaning is clear, e.g. 'wide area netowrk'.

Do not accept LAN/local area network.

Do not accept a description such as 'covers a large area' without naming WAN.

Do not accept 'the internet' or 'world wide web'.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

WAN (wide area network)

Why: Correct type of network (1).

No marks0/1

A network that covers a large area.

Why: Describes a WAN but does not name the type; no mark.

No marks0/1

LAN (local area network)

Why: Names the wrong type of network; the internet is a WAN.

3Explain2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

A wireless access point has a limited bandwidth.

Explain why connecting more devices to the access point can reduce the speed each device gets.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • (All) devices share the bandwidth of the access point (1) so each device gets a smaller share, which reduces its speed/slows down transfers (1)
  • Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data that can be transferred at one time (1) so when devices send more data than this, the data must wait/queue, which slows down transfers (1)
  • (Many) devices send data at the same time (1) so the devices take turns, which reduces the amount of data each one can send/the speed each device gets (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow 'connection speed'/'download speed' for speed.

Do not accept 'the signal is shared' without saying that this reduces the bandwidth/data each device can send.

Do not accept the idea that adding devices increases the bandwidth.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

All the devices share the access point's bandwidth, so each device gets less bandwidth and its downloads take longer.

Why: Linked point (1): bandwidth is shared; reason (1): each device gets a smaller share, which reduces its speed/slows transfers.

Some marks1/2

The bandwidth is shared between all the devices.

Why: Point only (1): the bandwidth is shared. No linked reason about each device getting less bandwidth or a reduced speed.

No marks0/2

Adding more devices increases the bandwidth, so the network can send more data.

Why: Misconception that adding devices increases bandwidth; the mark scheme says not to accept this.
