1Multiple choice1 markProtocols & Layers Swap Remove

A user reads email on a laptop. The emails are downloaded to the laptop and removed from the mail server.

Identify the email protocol being used.

[1 mark]
  • AFTP
  • BIMAP
  • CPOP3
  • DSMTP
Mark scheme
  • C POP3 (1)
  • The only correct answer is C. The correct answer is POP3.
  • A is not correct because FTP is used to transfer files.
  • B is not correct because IMAP keeps emails on the server.
  • D is not correct because SMTP is used to send outgoing email between mail servers.
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

C POP3

Why: POP3 downloads emails and removes them from the server (1).

No marks0/1

B IMAP

Why: IMAP keeps emails on the server, so it does not match the scenario where emails are removed from the server (0).

No marks0/1

D SMTP

Why: SMTP is used to send outgoing email, not to retrieve email (0).

2Short recall2 marksLANs & WANs Swap Remove

A school has computers in every classroom.

Define the term 'local area network (LAN)'.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • A network that covers a small geographical area / is on a single site / is within one building (1)
  • (Two or more) computers/devices connected together (1)
  • So that the connected devices can share data/files/resources such as printers or an internet connection (1)
  • Uses cabling/infrastructure owned by the organisation (1)

Do not accept a network that covers a large geographical area / connects networks in different countries, as this describes a WAN.

Do not accept 'a network in a school' on its own, as this repeats the stem without a LAN feature such as a single site or connected devices.

Do not accept 'a network that connects to the internet' without a LAN feature such as a single site or connected devices.

Do not accept 'owned by one organisation' on its own, as a WAN can also be owned by one organisation.

Do not accept 'local' on its own without saying what it means.

The share mark needs the sharing to be linked to the connected devices/network, e.g. 'share files' or 'share printers'.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

A LAN is a group of computers connected together on one site, such as a school, so that they can share files and printers.

Why: Connected together (1) and single site (1); the sharing point is also made but the maximum is two marks.

Some marks1/2

A network that is in one building.

Why: Covers a single site/one building (1) but does not say that devices are connected together or what they share.

No marks0/2

A network that covers a large area and connects different countries.

Why: Describes a WAN, not a LAN, so no creditworthy LAN point is made.

3Explain2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

A wireless access point has a limited bandwidth.

Explain why connecting more devices to the access point can reduce the speed each device gets.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • (All) devices share the bandwidth of the access point (1) so each device gets a smaller share, which reduces its speed/slows down transfers (1)
  • Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data that can be transferred at one time (1) so when devices send more data than this, the data must wait/queue, which slows down transfers (1)
  • (Many) devices send data at the same time (1) so the devices take turns, which reduces the amount of data each one can send/the speed each device gets (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow 'connection speed'/'download speed' for speed.

Do not accept 'the signal is shared' without saying that this reduces the bandwidth/data each device can send.

Do not accept the idea that adding devices increases the bandwidth.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

All the devices share the access point's bandwidth, so each device gets less bandwidth and its downloads take longer.

Why: Linked point (1): bandwidth is shared; reason (1): each device gets a smaller share, which reduces its speed/slows transfers.

Some marks1/2

The bandwidth is shared between all the devices.

Why: Point only (1): the bandwidth is shared. No linked reason about each device getting less bandwidth or a reduced speed.

No marks0/2

Adding more devices increases the bandwidth, so the network can send more data.

Why: Misconception that adding devices increases bandwidth; the mark scheme says not to accept this.
