  • DTCP
Mark scheme
  • C SMTP (1)
  • The only correct answer is C. The correct answer is SMTP.
  • A is not correct because FTP is used to upload and download files
  • B is not correct because HTTP is used to request web pages
  • D is not correct because TCP is a transport-layer protocol that splits data into packets and reassembles them
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

C SMTP

Why: Selected the correct email sending protocol (1).

No marks0/1

A FTP

Why: FTP is a file transfer protocol, not an email sending protocol, so no mark is awarded (0).

No marks0/1

B HTTP

Why: HTTP is used for requesting web pages, not for sending email, so no mark is awarded (0).

2Multiple choice1 markLANs & WANs Swap Remove

A hospital has computers, printers and servers in one building.

Identify the type of network that connects these devices.

[1 mark]
  • ALAN
  • BPAN
  • CVPN
  • DWAN
Mark scheme
  • A LAN (1)
  • The only correct answer is A. The correct answer is LAN (Local Area Network).
  • B is not correct because a PAN connects devices around one person over a short range
  • C is not correct because a VPN is a secure private connection made over a public network, not a network covering one building
  • D is not correct because a WAN connects networks over a large geographical area
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

A LAN

Why: Correct option: a LAN connects devices on one site, such as one building (1).

No marks0/1

D WAN

Why: Near miss: a WAN connects networks over a large geographical area, not devices within one building (0).

No marks0/1

C VPN

Why: Misconception: a VPN is a secure connection over a public network, not the type of network for devices in one building (0).

3Short recall2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

Latency affects the performance of a network.

Define the term latency.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • A delay/time/lag (1)
  • Between a signal/request being sent and a response/data being received (1)

Allow 'the time taken for data to travel from source to destination' for both marks.

Do not accept 'the speed at which data travels' / 'bandwidth' / 'the amount of data sent per second'.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The delay between a signal being sent and a response being received.

Why: Gives the delay (1) and the time between sending and receiving (1).

Some marks1/2

The time taken for data to travel.

Why: Gives the idea of time taken (1) but does not say between sending and receiving (1).

No marks0/2

The speed at which data is sent over the network.

Why: Describes speed, not latency; no creditworthy point.
