1Multiple choice1 markProtocols & Layers Swap Remove

A user sends an email from a laptop to a mail server.

Identify the protocol used to send the email.

[1 mark]
  • AFTP
  • BHTTP
  • CSMTP
  • DTCP
Mark scheme
  • C SMTP (1)
  • The only correct answer is C. The correct answer is SMTP.
  • A is not correct because FTP is used to upload and download files
  • B is not correct because HTTP is used to request web pages
  • D is not correct because TCP is a transport-layer protocol that splits data into packets and reassembles them
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

C SMTP

Why: Selected the correct email sending protocol (1).

No marks0/1

A FTP

Why: FTP is a file transfer protocol, not an email sending protocol, so no mark is awarded (0).

No marks0/1

B HTTP

Why: HTTP is used for requesting web pages, not for sending email, so no mark is awarded (0).

2Multiple choice1 markAddressing Swap Remove

Every device that connects to the internet is given an IP address.

Identify the number of bits in an IPv4 address.

[1 mark]
  • A4
  • B8
  • C32
  • D128
Mark scheme
  • C 32 (1)
  • The only correct answer is C. The correct answer is 32.
  • A is not correct because 4 is the number of groups of numbers in an IPv4 address
  • B is not correct because 8 is the number of bits in each group of an IPv4 address
  • D is not correct because 128 is the number of bits in an IPv6 address
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

C 32

Why: Correct option (1): an IPv4 address is 32 bits long.

No marks0/1

B 8

Why: 8 is the number of bits in one group of an IPv4 address, not the whole address (mark scheme line B), so no mark.

No marks0/1

D 128

Why: 128 is the length of an IPv6 address, not an IPv4 address (mark scheme line D), so no mark.

3Short recall2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

Wireless networks have a limited range.

State two factors that can reduce the range of a wireless network.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Walls/obstacles between the device and the access point (1)
  • Interference from other electrical devices/other devices/other wireless networks (1)
  • Distance from the access point (1)
  • Using a higher frequency band (e.g. 5GHz) (1)
  • Low transmit power of the access point/device (1)

Allow thick walls/furniture for walls/obstacles

Do not accept using more bandwidth

Do not accept a weaker signal without a stated cause

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Walls can block the signal, and moving further from the access point reduces the range.

Why: Gives walls as an obstacle (1) and distance from the access point (1).

Some marks1/2

Interference from other devices.

Why: Gives one valid factor, interference from other devices (1), but no second factor.

No marks0/2

Using more bandwidth reduces the range.

Why: Bandwidth does not reduce range; this is a near-miss listed as Do not accept, so no mark.
