1Explain2 marksPacket Switching Swap Remove

A router connects a home network to the internet.

Explain how a router uses the destination IP address in a packet header.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • The router reads the destination IP address (1) so it knows which network/device the packet is for (1)
  • The router looks up the destination IP address in its routing table (1) to find the next router/route for the packet (1)
  • The router forwards the packet to the next router (1) that leads towards that IP address / is on the best route (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not accept MAC address - routers use the IP address to route packets between networks.

Do not accept 'it finds the exact device' without saying how the router uses the address, e.g. routing table/next router.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The router looks up the destination IP address in its routing table to find the next router to send the packet to.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1): looks up the destination IP address in the routing table to find the next router.

Some marks1/2

It reads the destination IP address.

Why: Reads the destination IP address (1) but gives no linked reason about a routing table or next router.

No marks0/2

It reads the MAC address so it knows which computer sent the packet.

Why: Routers use the IP address to route packets, not the MAC address; no creditworthy point.

2Explain2 marksTopologies Swap Remove

A bus topology uses one main cable shared by all devices.

Explain why a bus topology can be a security risk.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • All devices receive every data packet (1) because the main cable is shared by all nodes (1)
  • Data can be read by any device on the network (1) because there is no central switch to send it only to the destination (1)
  • A device can intercept/capture data not meant for it (1) because all transmissions travel along the same cable (1)
  • Any device can view all data on the cable (1) so data is not private/secure (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not accept 'it is easy to hack' without saying data can be seen/intercepted on the shared cable.

Do not accept 'the central switch can be hacked' because a bus topology has no central switch.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Any device on the bus can see all the data because every packet travels along the same shared cable.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1): data is visible to all devices because the cable is shared.

Some marks1/2

All devices can see the data.

Why: Awarded 1 mark for stating that all devices can see the data, but no linked reason about the shared cable is given.

No marks0/2

It is less secure because the central switch can be hacked.

Why: No credit: a bus topology has no central switch; the answer gives a misconception and no valid point about the shared cable.

3Explain2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

A student plays an online game using a laptop connected to the school Wi-Fi.

Explain one reason why an online game can respond more slowly over a wireless connection than over a wired connection.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • Wireless signals can be blocked or absorbed by walls (1) so the data must be re-sent, which adds delay (1)
  • A device further from the access point has a weaker signal (1) so data must be re-sent/transmitted at a lower rate, adding delay (1)
  • Devices on a wireless network share a channel (1) so a device must wait its turn to transmit, which adds delay (1)
  • Interference from other devices affects the radio signal (1) so data must be re-sent, adding delay (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow 'waiting to send' or 'collisions' as the delay caused by devices sharing a channel.

Do not accept 'wireless is slower than wired' on its own, as this repeats the question.

Do not accept a reason that only affects download speed/bandwidth (e.g. 'files take longer to download') without a link to delay.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Interference from other devices affects the radio signal, so the data has to be re-sent and this adds delay before the player's action appears.

Why: Linked point (1): interference affects the signal; reason (1): re-sending the data adds delay (latency).

Some marks1/2

Walls can block the wireless signal.

Why: Point only (1): walls block the signal. No linked reason saying that this means data must be re-sent, which adds delay.

No marks0/2

Wireless has less bandwidth than wired, so a game update takes longer to download.

Why: Confuses latency with bandwidth/download speed; the mark scheme says not to accept this without a link to delay.
