1Short recall1 markLANs & WANs Swap Remove

A school's computers are connected in a local area network (LAN). The internet connects computers across the world.

State the type of network that the internet is an example of.

[1 mark]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for:

  • WAN/Wide Area Network (1)

Allow wide area network, WAN network, and minor spelling errors where the meaning is clear, e.g. 'wide area netowrk'.

Do not accept LAN/local area network.

Do not accept a description such as 'covers a large area' without naming WAN.

Do not accept 'the internet' or 'world wide web'.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

WAN (wide area network)

Why: Correct type of network (1).

No marks0/1

A network that covers a large area.

Why: Describes a WAN but does not name the type; no mark.

No marks0/1

LAN (local area network)

Why: Names the wrong type of network; the internet is a WAN.

2Short recall2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

Latency affects the performance of a network.

Define the term latency.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • A delay/time/lag (1)
  • Between a signal/request being sent and a response/data being received (1)

Allow 'the time taken for data to travel from source to destination' for both marks.

Do not accept 'the speed at which data travels' / 'bandwidth' / 'the amount of data sent per second'.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The delay between a signal being sent and a response being received.

Why: Gives the delay (1) and the time between sending and receiving (1).

Some marks1/2

The time taken for data to travel.

Why: Gives the idea of time taken (1) but does not say between sending and receiving (1).

No marks0/2

The speed at which data is sent over the network.

Why: Describes speed, not latency; no creditworthy point.

3Describe2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

A family uses a wireless network at home.

Describe how interference can affect the performance of a wireless network.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Other electrical/radio devices nearby (1) interfere with the wireless signal so data is corrupted (1)
  • Interference corrupts data (1) so the data has to be resent, which increases latency/slows the transfer (1)
  • Interference reduces the strength of the signal received (1) which lowers the data transfer rate the connection can support (1)
  • Interference makes the connection drop (1) so data transfer stops/devices have to reconnect (1)

Do not accept responses that only name a device (microwave, phone) without saying how it affects the network.

Do not accept responses that only state the network becomes slower without saying what causes the interference or how it affects the data.

Do not accept responses about wired connections or cables.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Other electrical devices nearby can interfere with the wireless signal and corrupt data, so the data has to be resent and transfers are slower.

Why: Linked point: other electrical devices interfere and corrupt data (1), developed by the data being resent, which slows the transfer (1).

Some marks1/2

Other electrical devices nearby can interfere with the wireless signal.

Why: Cause given: other electrical devices interfere with the signal (1), but no development of how this affects the data or performance.

No marks0/2

Interference happens when the wireless cable is damaged by other cables.

Why: Misconception about cables; the mark scheme does not accept responses about wired connections or cables.
