1Multiple choice1 markLANs & WANs Swap Remove

A supermarket chain has stores in several countries. Each store has its own network.

Identify the type of network that connects the stores in the different countries.

[1 mark]
  • ALAN
  • BPAN
  • CWAN
  • DWLAN
Mark scheme
  • C WAN (1)
  • The only correct answer is C. The correct answer is WAN, which connects networks over a large geographical area.
  • A is not correct because a LAN covers a limited area such as one building or site
  • B is not correct because a PAN connects devices around one person
  • D is not correct because a WLAN is a LAN that uses wireless connections and is still local
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

C WAN

Why: Correct option: a WAN connects networks over a large geographical area (1).

No marks0/1

A LAN

Why: Distractor, not a partial-credit answer: each store may have its own LAN, but the network linking stores in different countries is a WAN (0).

No marks0/1

D WLAN

Why: A WLAN is still a local-area network that uses wireless connections and cannot connect stores in different countries (0).

2Short recall1 markAddressing Swap Remove

Devices are given IP addresses.

Define the term dynamic IP address.

[1 mark]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for:

  • (An IP address that) can change / is not permanent (1)

Allow a changing IP address.

Allow a temporary IP address.

Allow it is assigned each time the device connects to the internet.

Do not accept an IP address that is assigned (automatically) by a router/DHCP without any idea that it can change.

Do not accept static IP address / fixed IP address / an IP address that never changes (this is a static IP address).

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

An IP address that can change each time the device connects to the internet.

Why: States that the IP address can change (1).

No marks0/1

An IP address that is assigned automatically by a router.

Why: Describes assignment only; the mark scheme does not accept assignment without the idea that the address can change.

No marks0/1

An IP address that never changes.

Why: Confuses dynamic with static; the Do not accept line applies.

3Short recall2 marksWired Connections Swap Remove

A school connects its desktop computers to the network using cables.

Give two reasons why the wired connections give better network performance than the wireless connections.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Faster transmission speed (1)
  • Higher bandwidth (1)
  • Lower latency (1)
  • Not affected by interference (from other devices/walls) (1)
  • No blind spots/not affected by distance from the wireless access point (1)

Do not accept benefits of wireless connections, e.g. users can move around the building with their devices

Do not accept 'easier to set up' or 'does not need a password' as these are not about network performance

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The wired connection is not affected by interference from other devices, and it has a lower latency than Wi-Fi.

Why: Interference point (1) and lower latency point (1).

Some marks1/2

It has a faster transmission speed and the users can move around the building with their computers.

Why: Faster transmission speed (1); moving around is a benefit of wireless, so is not credited.

No marks0/2

It is easier to set up the network and the users do not need a password.

Why: Neither point is about network performance; the mark scheme does not accept 'easier to set up' or password points, so no marks.
