1Short recall1 markAddressing Swap Remove

Devices are given IP addresses.

Define the term dynamic IP address.

[1 mark]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for:

  • (An IP address that) can change / is not permanent (1)

Allow a changing IP address.

Allow a temporary IP address.

Allow it is assigned each time the device connects to the internet.

Do not accept an IP address that is assigned (automatically) by a router/DHCP without any idea that it can change.

Do not accept static IP address / fixed IP address / an IP address that never changes (this is a static IP address).

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

An IP address that can change each time the device connects to the internet.

Why: States that the IP address can change (1).

No marks0/1

An IP address that is assigned automatically by a router.

Why: Describes assignment only; the mark scheme does not accept assignment without the idea that the address can change.

No marks0/1

An IP address that never changes.

Why: Confuses dynamic with static; the Do not accept line applies.

2Short recall2 marksWired Connections Swap Remove

A company can choose between two wired connections. Connection B has a higher bandwidth than connection A.

Give two benefits to the company of choosing connection B.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Files/data download/upload more quickly (1)
  • More employees can use the connection at the same time without it slowing down (1)
  • Web pages/streamed video load more quickly with less buffering (1)
  • Video calls/conferencing run at a higher quality (1)
  • Updates/backups can be completed in less time (1)

Allow 'multiple users' or 'more devices' for the shared-use point

Allow 'video streams more quickly' or 'less buffering' on their own

Do not accept lower latency, as a higher bandwidth does not reduce latency

Do not accept 'more data can be transferred per second' or 'a bigger bandwidth', as these repeat what bandwidth is

Do not accept 'more reliable' on its own, as a higher bandwidth does not make a wired connection more reliable

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Files will download more quickly, and more employees can use the internet at the same time without the connection slowing down.

Why: Files download more quickly (1) and more users without slowdown (1).

Some marks1/2

Web pages will load faster and the connection will have a longer range.

Why: Web pages load faster (1); the range of a connection is not increased by bandwidth, so that point is not credited.

No marks0/2

The connection will be more reliable because it has a bigger bandwidth.

Why: 'More reliable' is not credited on its own and 'bigger bandwidth' repeats the question, so no marks.

3Describe2 marksAddressing Swap Remove

A laptop is used at home and then taken on holiday.

Describe how the laptop's IP address can change.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • The IP address belongs to the network/router the device is connected to (1) so a different network/router gives it a new address (1)
  • Home routers may use dynamic IP addresses (1) which can change when the router reconnects (1)
  • The ISP assigns the IP address (1) and may give a different one at a new location/connection (1)

Do not accept answers that only say the laptop has moved.

Do not accept the MAC address changes.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The IP address is assigned by the router on the network it connects to, so when the laptop joins a different network on holiday it is given a new address.

Why: Linked point (1): IP address belongs to the connected network/router; development (1): a different network gives it a new address.

Some marks1/2

The IP address can change because it is dynamic.

Why: Point only (1): home routers may use dynamic IP addresses; the linked development about reconnecting is missing.

No marks0/2

The laptop's MAC address changes when it connects to a different network, so its IP address changes too.

Why: No creditworthy point: says the MAC address changes, which the mark scheme says not to accept.
