1Short recall1 markAddressing Swap Remove

Routers forward data packets across the internet.

State the part of a data packet that a router uses to decide where to send it.

[1 mark]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for:

  • (Destination) IP address (1)

Allow IP address on its own (the destination is implied).

Do not accept source IP address/IP address of the sender.

Do not accept MAC address.

Do not accept domain name/web address.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

The destination IP address.

Why: Names the destination IP address (1).

No marks0/1

The domain name.

Why: A domain name is not used by a router to route a packet; it must be translated to an IP address first, so no mark.

No marks0/1

The MAC address.

Why: A MAC address is not used to route packets across the internet; the Do not accept line applies.

2Describe2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

An office has one wireless access point that employees connect their laptops to.

Describe how connecting more devices to the wireless access point can affect the speed and latency of the network.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • The bandwidth/capacity of the access point is shared between all the connected devices (1) so each device gets less bandwidth as more devices connect, which reduces the speed of data transfer (1)
  • The devices have to take turns to transmit (contention) (1) so each device waits longer before it can send data, which increases latency (1)
  • The access point can only support a maximum number of connections (1) so once this limit is reached, further devices cannot connect to the network (1)

Allow 'contention' as an alternative to devices having to take turns to transmit.

Allow 'the network becomes slower' as the second mark only where it is linked to shared bandwidth, to devices taking turns to transmit or to the maximum number of connections.

Do not accept a response that only states the network becomes slower, or that there are more devices/more traffic, without saying how this affects performance.

Do not accept responses about range or interference unless they are linked to the number of connected devices.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

All of the connected devices share the bandwidth of the access point, so as more devices are added each device gets less bandwidth and data is transferred more slowly.

Why: Shared bandwidth point (1) developed into the effect on the speed of data transfer (1).

Some marks1/2

The bandwidth of the access point has to be shared between all the devices that are connected to it.

Why: Correct point that bandwidth is shared (1), but there is no development saying how this affects the speed or latency, so only one mark.

No marks0/2

Each device gets its own bandwidth from the access point, so adding more devices does not change the speed.

Why: Misconception that bandwidth is not shared, so no creditworthy point is made.

3Describe2 marksLANs & WANs Swap Remove

A dental practice has five computers in one building. The computers are connected in a local area network (LAN).

Describe one feature of a LAN that makes it suitable for the dental practice.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Covers a small geographical area/one building/site (1) so all the computers can be connected on the same network (1)
  • The devices are close together (1) so short cables can be used to connect them (1)
  • Uses the practice's own cabling/equipment (1) so no leased lines/third-party provider are needed (1)

A feature on its own (e.g. 'A LAN covers a small area') earns the first mark only.

Award the second mark only where the feature is linked to why it suits the dental practice.

Do not accept 'A LAN is cheap' or 'A LAN is quick to set up' unless linked to the single site/close devices.

Do not accept a response that says a LAN is fast/secure without a linked statement about the site or the distance between devices.

Do not accept responses that only describe sharing printers/files without linking this to the single site.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The computers are all in one building, so the practice can connect them all on the same network.

Why: One building/site (1) linked to connecting all the computers on the same network (1).

Some marks1/2

A LAN covers a small area.

Why: Correct feature (1) but no linked development to suitability.

No marks0/2

A LAN is a fast network that does not get viruses.

Why: Speed and security are not accepted without a link to the single site or distance between devices; no creditworthy point.
