1Multiple choice1 markAddressing Swap Remove

A technician is checking the IP addresses of the devices on a network.

Identify the valid IPv4 address.

[1 mark]
  • A192.168.1
  • B192.168.1.1
  • C192.168.1.1.1
  • D192.168.1.256
Mark scheme
  • B 192.168.1.1 (1)
  • The only correct answer is B. The correct answer is 192.168.1.1.
  • A is not correct because it is an incomplete address with only three numbers, not four
  • C is not correct because it is an address with five numbers, not four
  • D is not correct because it contains 256, which is outside the range 0 to 255
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

B 192.168.1.1

Why: Correct option (1): an IPv4 address is four numbers, each from 0 to 255, separated by dots.

No marks0/1

D 192.168.1.256

Why: Near miss: it has four numbers but 256 is outside the range 0 to 255 (mark scheme line D), so no mark.

No marks0/1

A 192.168.1

Why: It has only three numbers, so it is not a complete IPv4 address (mark scheme line A), so no mark.

2Short recall1 markWireless Connections Swap Remove

A wireless network has a fixed amount of bandwidth.

State what happens to the bandwidth available to each device as more devices connect to the network.

[1 mark]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for:

  • It is shared between more devices, so each device gets less (bandwidth) (1)

Allow 'the bandwidth is divided/split between the devices'.

Allow 'there is less bandwidth for each device'.

Do not accept 'the speed decreases' / 'the connection slows down' on its own.

Do not accept 'the bandwidth decreases' unless it refers to the bandwidth available to each device.

Do not accept 'the bandwidth increases'.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

It is shared between more devices, so each device gets less bandwidth.

Why: States that the bandwidth is shared between more devices and so each device gets less (1).

No marks0/1

The speed for each device decreases.

Why: Describes speed rather than bandwidth; this near-miss is ruled out by the 'Do not accept' line.

No marks0/1

The bandwidth increases because more devices are connected.

Why: Contradicts the correct answer; bandwidth is shared between the devices, it does not increase, so no mark.

3Describe2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

A family uses a wireless network at home.

Describe how interference can affect the performance of a wireless network.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Other electrical/radio devices nearby (1) interfere with the wireless signal so data is corrupted (1)
  • Interference corrupts data (1) so the data has to be resent, which increases latency/slows the transfer (1)
  • Interference reduces the strength of the signal received (1) which lowers the data transfer rate the connection can support (1)
  • Interference makes the connection drop (1) so data transfer stops/devices have to reconnect (1)

Do not accept responses that only name a device (microwave, phone) without saying how it affects the network.

Do not accept responses that only state the network becomes slower without saying what causes the interference or how it affects the data.

Do not accept responses about wired connections or cables.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Other electrical devices nearby can interfere with the wireless signal and corrupt data, so the data has to be resent and transfers are slower.

Why: Linked point: other electrical devices interfere and corrupt data (1), developed by the data being resent, which slows the transfer (1).

Some marks1/2

Other electrical devices nearby can interfere with the wireless signal.

Why: Cause given: other electrical devices interfere with the signal (1), but no development of how this affects the data or performance.

No marks0/2

Interference happens when the wireless cable is damaged by other cables.

Why: Misconception about cables; the mark scheme does not accept responses about wired connections or cables.
