1Multiple choice1 markAddressing Swap Remove

A technician is checking the IP addresses of the devices on a network.

Identify the valid IPv4 address.

[1 mark]
  • A192.168.1
  • B192.168.1.1
  • C192.168.1.1.1
  • D192.168.1.256
Mark scheme
  • B 192.168.1.1 (1)
  • The only correct answer is B. The correct answer is 192.168.1.1.
  • A is not correct because it is an incomplete address with only three numbers, not four
  • C is not correct because it is an address with five numbers, not four
  • D is not correct because it contains 256, which is outside the range 0 to 255
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

B 192.168.1.1

Why: Correct option (1): an IPv4 address is four numbers, each from 0 to 255, separated by dots.

No marks0/1

D 192.168.1.256

Why: Near miss: it has four numbers but 256 is outside the range 0 to 255 (mark scheme line D), so no mark.

No marks0/1

A 192.168.1

Why: It has only three numbers, so it is not a complete IPv4 address (mark scheme line A), so no mark.

2Short recall2 marksWired Connections Swap Remove

A school connects its desktop computers to the network using cables.

Give two reasons why the wired connections give better network performance than the wireless connections.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Faster transmission speed (1)
  • Higher bandwidth (1)
  • Lower latency (1)
  • Not affected by interference (from other devices/walls) (1)
  • No blind spots/not affected by distance from the wireless access point (1)

Do not accept benefits of wireless connections, e.g. users can move around the building with their devices

Do not accept 'easier to set up' or 'does not need a password' as these are not about network performance

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The wired connection is not affected by interference from other devices, and it has a lower latency than Wi-Fi.

Why: Interference point (1) and lower latency point (1).

Some marks1/2

It has a faster transmission speed and the users can move around the building with their computers.

Why: Faster transmission speed (1); moving around is a benefit of wireless, so is not credited.

No marks0/2

It is easier to set up the network and the users do not need a password.

Why: Neither point is about network performance; the mark scheme does not accept 'easier to set up' or password points, so no marks.

3Describe2 marksAddressing Swap Remove

Devices on a network use IP addresses.

Describe the purpose of an IP address.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Identifies a device on a network (1) so data can be sent to the correct device (1)
  • Gives a device a unique address (1) so packets can be routed to it across the internet (1)
  • Identifies a device on the internet (1) so it can send/receive data to/from other devices (1)

Allow 'unique' only where it is linked to identifying the device or to routing data; 'unique' on its own is not creditworthy.

Do not accept answers that only say it connects a device to the internet.

Do not accept a MAC address as the purpose of an IP address.

Do not accept domain names/web addresses (e.g. google.co.uk) as an IP address.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

An IP address uniquely identifies a device on a network so that data packets can be delivered to the correct destination.

Why: Linked point (1): identifies a device on a network; development (1): so data can be sent to the correct device.

Some marks1/2

It identifies a device on a network.

Why: Point only (1): identifies a device on a network; no linked development.

No marks0/2

It is a website address, such as google.co.uk, that the browser uses to find a web page.

Why: No creditworthy point: gives a domain name/web address, which the mark scheme says not to accept as an IP address.
