[1 mark]
  • A192.168.1
  • B192.168.1.1
  • C192.168.1.1.1
  • D192.168.1.256
Mark scheme
  • B 192.168.1.1 (1)
  • The only correct answer is B. The correct answer is 192.168.1.1.
  • A is not correct because it is an incomplete address with only three numbers, not four
  • C is not correct because it is an address with five numbers, not four
  • D is not correct because it contains 256, which is outside the range 0 to 255
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

B 192.168.1.1

Why: Correct option (1): an IPv4 address is four numbers, each from 0 to 255, separated by dots.

No marks0/1

D 192.168.1.256

Why: Near miss: it has four numbers but 256 is outside the range 0 to 255 (mark scheme line D), so no mark.

No marks0/1

A 192.168.1

Why: It has only three numbers, so it is not a complete IPv4 address (mark scheme line A), so no mark.

2Short recall1 markTopologies Swap Remove

A bus topology uses terminators at each end of the main cable.

State the purpose of terminators in a bus topology.

[1 mark]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for:

  • Absorb signals (at the ends of the bus cable) / prevent signals reflecting (back along the cable) (1)

Allow 'stop data/signals bouncing back' for prevent signals reflecting

Do not accept 'terminate the cable' / 'close the end of the cable' on its own

Do not accept boost/repeat/strengthen the signal

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

To absorb signals so that they do not reflect back along the bus cable.

Why: Absorbing signals and preventing reflection are alternatives within the one creditworthy point (1).

No marks0/1

To terminate the cable at each end.

Why: Near miss: this is rejected by the 'terminate the cable' guidance because it does not say signals are absorbed or prevented from reflecting.

No marks0/1

To make the signal stronger at the end of the cable.

Why: Misconception: terminators absorb signals; they do not boost, repeat or strengthen them.

3Describe2 marksUtility Software Swap Remove

A small business stores its customer records on a computer.

Describe the purpose of backup software.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Makes a copy/duplicate of the files/data (1) and stores it on a separate storage device/at a different location (1)
  • Copies the data at regular intervals (1) so a recent version is available if the original is lost (1)
  • Keeps a copy of the files (1) so that the data can be restored after the original is deleted/corrupted (1)
  • Stores the copies on another device (1) so the data is not lost if the original device fails/is damaged by a fire or flood (1)

Do not accept 'it backs up the files' on its own, as this repeats the question.

Do not accept responses about repairing corrupted files or removing malware, as these are different utility programs.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It makes a copy of the data and saves it on a separate storage device so that the records can be restored if the original files are deleted or the computer fails.

Why: The point (1) and a linked development giving the purpose of the copy (1).

Some marks1/2

It makes a copy of the files and saves it on another disk.

Why: The point and location are given (1), but there is no development saying what the copy is used for, so no second mark.

No marks0/2

It repairs damaged files so that they can be opened again by the program.

Why: This describes file repair software, which the mark scheme does not accept for this question.
