  • A192.168.1
  • B192.168.1.1
  • C192.168.1.1.1
  • D192.168.1.256
Mark scheme
  • B 192.168.1.1 (1)
  • The only correct answer is B. The correct answer is 192.168.1.1.
  • A is not correct because it is an incomplete address with only three numbers, not four
  • C is not correct because it is an address with five numbers, not four
  • D is not correct because it contains 256, which is outside the range 0 to 255
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

B 192.168.1.1

Why: Correct option (1): an IPv4 address is four numbers, each from 0 to 255, separated by dots.

No marks0/1

D 192.168.1.256

Why: Near miss: it has four numbers but 256 is outside the range 0 to 255 (mark scheme line D), so no mark.

No marks0/1

A 192.168.1

Why: It has only three numbers, so it is not a complete IPv4 address (mark scheme line A), so no mark.

Mark scheme

Award one mark for:

  • (An IP address that) can change / is not permanent (1)

Allow a changing IP address.

Allow a temporary IP address.

Allow it is assigned each time the device connects to the internet.

Do not accept an IP address that is assigned (automatically) by a router/DHCP without any idea that it can change.

Do not accept static IP address / fixed IP address / an IP address that never changes (this is a static IP address).

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

An IP address that can change each time the device connects to the internet.

Why: States that the IP address can change (1).

No marks0/1

An IP address that is assigned automatically by a router.

Why: Describes assignment only; the mark scheme does not accept assignment without the idea that the address can change.

No marks0/1

An IP address that never changes.

Why: Confuses dynamic with static; the Do not accept line applies.

3Explain2 marksProtocols & Layers Swap Remove

Email protocols are used when an email is sent and received.

Explain the role of SMTP when an email is sent.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • Sends outgoing email from the client to the mail server (1) so it can be forwarded/relayed to the recipient's mail server (1)
  • Transfers email between mail servers (1) so it reaches the destination server (1)
  • Pushes/sends the email message (1) because it handles outgoing mail while POP3/IMAP handle incoming mail (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not accept receiving/downloading email or storing email on the server, which is POP3/IMAP.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

SMTP sends the email from the sender's computer to the mail server so it can be forwarded on to the recipient's mail server.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1): sends to the mail server so it can be forwarded.

Some marks1/2

SMTP is used to send emails.

Why: Role (1) identified, but no linked reason or expansion of what sending involves.

No marks0/2

SMTP downloads the email to the recipient's device so they can read it.

Why: Downloading email is the role of POP3/IMAP, not SMTP, so no credit is given.
