1Multiple choice1 markAddressing Swap Remove

Data is sent across the internet in packets.

Identify the device that uses IP addresses to forward packets from one network to another.

[1 mark]
  • AHub
  • BNetwork interface card
  • CRouter
  • DSwitch
Mark scheme
  • C Router (1)
  • The only correct answer is C. The correct answer is router.
  • A is not correct because a hub sends data to every device on the network
  • B is not correct because a network interface card connects a device to a network
  • D is not correct because a switch forwards data within a single network using MAC addresses
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

C Router

Why: Correct option (1): a router uses IP addresses to forward packets between networks.

No marks0/1

D Switch

Why: A switch forwards data within one network using MAC addresses, not between networks (mark scheme line D), so no mark.

No marks0/1

A Hub

Why: A hub only sends data to every device on the network (mark scheme line A), so no mark.

2Explain2 marksWired Connections Swap Remove

A video production company stores large video files on a server. It is replacing the copper cables in its office with fibre optic cables.

Explain how using fibre optic cables instead of copper cables could improve the bandwidth of the company's network.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • Fibre optic cables have a higher bandwidth than copper cables (1) so a greater amount of data can be transferred each second (1)
  • Fibre optic cables carry data as pulses of light (1) so a greater amount of data can be carried each second than by the electrical signals in a copper cable (1)
  • Fibre optic cables are not affected by electromagnetic interference (1) so the maximum amount of data the cable can carry is not reduced by nearby electrical equipment (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not accept 'faster' on its own without expansion as to what is faster, such as a greater amount of data being carried each second.

Do not accept 'more reliable' or 'less interference' on its own without linking it to the amount of data that can be carried.

Do not accept answers about the cost of the cables or their installation.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Fibre optic cables have a higher bandwidth than copper cables, so more data can be transferred every second, which means the large video files transfer more quickly.

Why: Higher bandwidth (1) and the linked reason that more data can be transferred each second (1).

Some marks1/2

Fibre optic cables have a much higher bandwidth than copper cables.

Why: Higher bandwidth (1) but no linked reason about the amount of data that can be carried.

No marks0/2

Fibre optic cables are newer and more expensive than copper, so the network can carry more data.

Why: Cost and age are not accepted, so the 'carry more data' expansion has no valid point to link to (0).

3Explain2 marksWireless Connections Swap Remove

A student plays an online game using a laptop connected to the school Wi-Fi.

Explain one reason why an online game can respond more slowly over a wireless connection than over a wired connection.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • Wireless signals can be blocked or absorbed by walls (1) so the data must be re-sent, which adds delay (1)
  • A device further from the access point has a weaker signal (1) so data must be re-sent/transmitted at a lower rate, adding delay (1)
  • Devices on a wireless network share a channel (1) so a device must wait its turn to transmit, which adds delay (1)
  • Interference from other devices affects the radio signal (1) so data must be re-sent, adding delay (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow 'waiting to send' or 'collisions' as the delay caused by devices sharing a channel.

Do not accept 'wireless is slower than wired' on its own, as this repeats the question.

Do not accept a reason that only affects download speed/bandwidth (e.g. 'files take longer to download') without a link to delay.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Interference from other devices affects the radio signal, so the data has to be re-sent and this adds delay before the player's action appears.

Why: Linked point (1): interference affects the signal; reason (1): re-sending the data adds delay (latency).

Some marks1/2

Walls can block the wireless signal.

Why: Point only (1): walls block the signal. No linked reason saying that this means data must be re-sent, which adds delay.

No marks0/2

Wireless has less bandwidth than wired, so a game update takes longer to download.

Why: Confuses latency with bandwidth/download speed; the mark scheme says not to accept this without a link to delay.
