1Describe2 marksUtility Software Swap Remove

A student has a large number of photographs stored on a computer.

Describe the purpose of data compression software.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Makes a file/files smaller (1) so less storage space is needed on the disk (1)
  • Reduces the size of the data (1) so it takes less time to upload/download/transfer the file (1)
  • Compresses files/folders into a single file (1) so an attachment is under the size limit for email (1)
  • Reduces the size of the files (1) so more of them fit onto a storage device/backup media (1)

Do not accept 'it compresses the files' on its own, as this repeats the question.

Do not accept responses about protecting files from malware/viruses or about deleting files.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It makes the files smaller so that they use less storage space on the computer and more of them fit on the disk.

Why: The point (1) and a linked development giving the benefit (1).

Some marks1/2

It makes files smaller.

Why: This is the point (1) but there is no development of what the smaller size leads to, so only one mark.

No marks0/2

It protects the files from viruses so that they cannot be damaged.

Why: This describes anti-malware software, which the mark scheme does not accept; no creditworthy point is made.

2Explain2 marksPeripheral Management Swap Remove

A new printer is connected to a computer.

Explain the purpose of a device driver.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • It allows the operating system/OS to communicate with the device/printer (1) because it translates the commands into signals the device understands (1)
  • It contains/sends the instructions/commands needed by a particular device (1) so the device carries out the correct actions (1)
  • It controls the device/printer (1) by sending commands/signals to it (1)
  • Different devices need different commands (1) so each one needs its own driver to work with the operating system (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not accept 'it drives/controls the device' on its own without saying how, e.g. by sending commands/signals.

Do not accept hardware/a physical device (a device driver is software).

Do not accept 'it connects the printer to the computer' or 'it installs the printer' without saying that it provides the instructions/commands for the device.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It allows the operating system to send commands to the printer because it translates them into signals that the printer understands.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1).

Some marks1/2

It contains the instructions that the printer needs.

Why: Point (1) but no linked reason.

No marks0/2

It is a piece of hardware that connects the printer to the computer.

Why: Misconception: a device driver is software, not hardware, and saying it connects the printer is not accepted without saying it provides the instructions/commands.

3Explain2 marksPurpose & Function of Operating Systems Swap Remove

A school has bought a new printer for one of its computers.

Explain one reason why an operating system needs peripheral management.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • The operating system uses the printer's device driver to communicate with the printer (1) so the print job is sent as commands the printer can carry out (1)
  • The operating system holds print jobs in a queue/buffer (1) because the computer sends data faster than the printer can print it (1)
  • The operating system reports the printer's status to the user (1) so the user knows what to do when there is a problem such as the paper running out (1)
  • The operating system handles interrupts/signals from the printer (1) so a problem such as a paper jam is dealt with while other programs carry on running (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow a point about the operating system loading/installing the device driver for a new printer (1) provided the second mark gives a reason that is not the same as the driver communication point, e.g. so the new printer can be used/controlled by the operating system (1)

Award 1 mark for stating that print jobs are held in a queue/a buffer; the second mark needs the linked reason that the printer prints more slowly than data is sent.

Do not accept restating the question, e.g. 'it manages the printer' or 'it controls the peripherals', without saying how or why.

Do not accept 'it lets the printer connect to the computer' or 'it stops the printer being damaged' without a linked reason.

Do not accept 'it makes the printer print faster' as the operating system cannot increase the printer's speed.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The operating system uses the printer's device driver to send the print job so the printer receives the data as commands it can understand.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1): device driver used to communicate, and the job is sent as commands the printer can carry out.

Some marks1/2

It puts print jobs into a queue.

Why: Point (1) only: the queue/buffer is named, but no linked reason (that the printer prints more slowly than data is sent) is given.

No marks0/2

It makes the printer print faster.

Why: Misconception named in the 'Do not accept' line: the operating system cannot increase the printer's speed, so there is no creditworthy point.

4Discuss6 marksFile Management Swap Remove

A student keeps school work and photographs on a laptop. The laptop's storage is almost full. The student uses the operating system's file management.

Discuss the file management tasks the operating system provides that the student can use to manage these files.

Your answer should include:

  • saving files
  • deleting files
  • copying files
[6 marks]
Mark scheme

Indicative content

Saving files

  • When saving, the operating system lets the student choose the folder and the file name, so new work goes into the correct subject folder instead of the root.
  • The operating system warns the student before a file with the same name is overwritten, so an earlier version of an essay is not lost by accident.
  • The operating system writes the file into free space on the laptop and records where it is, so the student can open it again later.

Deleting files

  • The operating system lets the student delete files that are no longer needed, which frees space so new photographs can be saved.
  • Deleted files are usually moved to the recycle bin first, so a file removed by mistake can be restored.
  • Emptying the recycle bin removes the data permanently and releases the space for other files.

Copying files

  • The operating system lets the student copy files to a USB flash drive, so there is a second copy if the laptop is lost or damaged.
  • Copying leaves the original file in place, so the student can carry on working on the laptop's copy.
  • A whole folder can be copied in one action, including its subfolders, which is quicker than copying each file separately.

Levels

  • Level 0 (0 marks): No rewardable content.
  • Level 1 (1–2 marks): Basic, independent points are made, showing elements of understanding of key concepts/principles of computer science. (AO1) The discussion will contain basic information with little linkage between points made or application to the context. (AO2)
  • Level 2 (3–4 marks): Demonstrates adequate understanding of key concepts/principles of computer science. (AO1) The discussion shows some linkages and lines of reasoning with some structure and application to the context. (AO2)
  • Level 3 (5–6 marks): Demonstrates comprehensive understanding of key concepts/principles of computer science to support the discussion being presented. (AO1) The discussion is well developed, with sustained lines of reasoning that are coherent and logically structured, and which clearly apply to the context. (AO2)

Level 3 responses must cover saving, deleting and copying.

Do not accept answers about the processor or defragmentation as file management tasks.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks6/6

When the student saves a file, the operating system lets them pick the folder and name, and it warns before a file with the same name is overwritten, so an earlier essay is not lost. Because the laptop is nearly full, the student can delete photographs they no longer need; these go to the recycle bin at first, so a file removed by mistake can be restored, and emptying the bin releases the space for good. The student can also copy their school work to a USB flash drive, which leaves the original on the laptop and gives a backup if the laptop is damaged.

Why: Saving (choice of folder and name, overwrite warning), deleting (recycle bin, restoring, releasing space) and copying (backup on a USB drive, original kept) are all explained and tied to the student's full laptop.

Some marks3/6

The student can save files into folders so they know where they are. They can delete files they do not need to free up space. They can copy files onto a memory stick.

Why: Three tasks are named with a reason for deleting, but saving and copying are not developed and there is little linkage between the points, so Level 2.

No marks0/6

The operating system saves files automatically and deletes old files when the RAM is full. The processor copies the files to the hard disk.

Why: No creditworthy point: files are not saved automatically, RAM filling does not trigger file deletion, and copying is not done by the processor. Typical confusion between file management and memory or processor management.
