1Short recall2 marksUtility Software Swap Remove

Compression software is a type of utility software. A student compresses a large video file before emailing it.

Give two benefits of compressing the video file.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Reduces the file size / uses less storage space (1)
  • Takes less time to upload/download/send (1)
  • Uses less bandwidth / reduces the amount of data transferred (1)
  • The file is more likely to fit within an email attachment size limit (1)
  • Reduces the amount of storage needed for backups / more files can be stored on backup media (1)

Do not award both 'reduces the file size' and 'uses less storage space' as two separate benefits.

Do not award both 'takes less time to send' and 'uses less bandwidth' as two separate benefits.

Do not accept 'it is compressed' on its own.

Do not accept 'it makes the file easier to send' unless a benefit such as a smaller file or less time is given.

Do not accept 'better quality'.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It uses less storage space and it will upload more quickly.

Why: Uses less storage space (1) and takes less time to upload (1).

Some marks1/2

It reduces the size of the file.

Why: Reduces file size (1); no second distinct benefit.

No marks0/2

The video will have better quality.

Why: Better quality is not a benefit of compression; no mark.

2Short recall1 markSoftware Basics Swap Remove

A hard disk drive stores files in pieces in different places on the disk, so the files take longer to open.

Name the utility software that can be used to improve this.

[1 mark]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for:

  • Disk defragmentation (software) (1)

Allow defragmentation software, defragmenter, defrag.

Do not accept disk cleanup, disk formatter, file repair software or backup software.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

Disk defragmentation software.

Why: Names the correct utility software (1).

No marks0/1

Disk cleanup software.

Why: Disk cleanup is a near-miss: it is not the utility that rearranges files stored in pieces, so no mark is awarded.

No marks0/1

File repair software.

Why: File repair fixes damaged files and does not bring the pieces of a file back together, so no mark is awarded.

3Short recall2 marksUser Management Swap Remove

A user must log in before using a computer.

State two methods, other than a password, that an operating system can use to authenticate a user.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Fingerprint scan (1)
  • Face recognition (1)
  • Iris/retina scan (1)
  • Voice recognition (1)
  • Palm print/vein scan (1)
  • Smart card (1)
  • Security token (1)
  • Authenticator app (1)

Allow one-time passcode (OTP) for authenticator app.

Do not accept password (given in the question).

Do not accept username/user ID (it identifies the user but does not authenticate them).

Do not accept 'two-factor authentication' on its own (it is a combination of methods, not a method itself).

Do not accept 'encryption'.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Fingerprint scan and a smart card.

Why: Fingerprint scan (1) and smart card (1) are two accepted methods.

Some marks1/2

Fingerprint scan and a username.

Why: Fingerprint scan (1); username is not accepted because it does not authenticate the user.

No marks0/2

A username and two-factor authentication.

Why: Username is not accepted because it does not authenticate the user, and two-factor authentication alone is not accepted because it is a combination of methods.

4Describe2 marksMemory Management Swap Remove

The operating system is held in main memory while the computer is running.

Describe how the operating system stops a running program from overwriting memory that is not its own.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • It keeps a record of which memory addresses/areas belong to each program and to the operating system (1) so it knows which addresses a program is allowed to use (1)
  • Each program is given its own area of main memory (1) so a program cannot write to the addresses used by another program or by the operating system (1)
  • The memory used by the operating system is marked as protected/reserved (1) so a program that tries to write to it is blocked/causes an error (1)
  • The address a program writes to is checked against the record of its allocated area (1) and the write is stopped if the address is outside that area (1)

Allow the memory being protected to be that of the operating system or of another program.

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not award generic answers such as 'the operating system manages memory' or 'the operating system keeps track of memory'.

Do not award responses about stopping programs using too much memory or allocating memory, as these are not about protecting memory being overwritten.

Do not award responses about virtual memory, paging or moving processes to secondary storage.

Do not award responses about firewalls, antivirus software or passwords.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The operating system gives each program its own area of main memory so that a program cannot write to the addresses used by another program or by the operating system.

Why: Each program is given its own area of main memory (1) linked to it not being able to write to the addresses used by another program or the operating system (1).

Some marks1/2

The operating system gives each program its own area of main memory.

Why: Each program is given its own area of main memory (1), but there is no linked development saying how this stops a program overwriting memory that is not its own.

No marks0/2

The operating system stops a program overwriting memory by moving it into virtual memory when it uses too much.

Why: This describes virtual memory and limiting how much memory a program uses, not protecting memory from being overwritten, so neither bullet applies and the Do not award lines rule it out.

5Explain2 marksPeripheral Management Swap Remove

A new printer is connected to a computer.

Explain the purpose of a device driver.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • It allows the operating system/OS to communicate with the device/printer (1) because it translates the commands into signals the device understands (1)
  • It contains/sends the instructions/commands needed by a particular device (1) so the device carries out the correct actions (1)
  • It controls the device/printer (1) by sending commands/signals to it (1)
  • Different devices need different commands (1) so each one needs its own driver to work with the operating system (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not accept 'it drives/controls the device' on its own without saying how, e.g. by sending commands/signals.

Do not accept hardware/a physical device (a device driver is software).

Do not accept 'it connects the printer to the computer' or 'it installs the printer' without saying that it provides the instructions/commands for the device.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It allows the operating system to send commands to the printer because it translates them into signals that the printer understands.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1).

Some marks1/2

It contains the instructions that the printer needs.

Why: Point (1) but no linked reason.

No marks0/2

It is a piece of hardware that connects the printer to the computer.

Why: Misconception: a device driver is software, not hardware, and saying it connects the printer is not accepted without saying it provides the instructions/commands.
