1Multiple choice1 markPrimary Memory Swap Remove

Identify what is fetched from RAM during the fetch stage.

[1 mark]
  • AThe next instruction
  • BThe data at a memory address
  • CThe decoded instruction
  • DThe address of the next instruction
Mark scheme
  • A The next instruction (1)
  • The only correct answer is A. The correct answer is the next instruction.
  • B is not correct because data is fetched during the execute stage
  • C is not correct because an instruction is decoded after it is fetched
  • D is not correct because the program counter holds the address used to fetch the instruction
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

A The next instruction

Why: The next instruction is fetched from RAM during the fetch stage (1).

No marks0/1

B The data at a memory address

Why: Near miss: data is not fetched during the fetch stage; data is used during the execute stage.

No marks0/1

C The decoded instruction

Why: Misconception: an instruction is decoded after it is fetched, in the decode stage.

2Describe2 marksStored Program Computers Swap Remove

The control unit (CU) is a component inside the CPU.

Describe the role of the control unit in the fetch-decode-execute cycle.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Decodes each (fetched) instruction (1) to work out which operation is needed / which components should carry it out (1)
  • Coordinates/directs the other components (1) by sending control signals along the control bus (1)
  • Fetches the next instruction (1) by sending its address to main memory along the address bus (1)
  • Sends a read/write control signal to main memory (1) so that the instruction or data is transferred during the fetch/execute stage (1)

Do not accept answers about synchronising the CPU or timing the cycles (that is the role of the clock).

Do not accept answers about carrying out arithmetic or logical operations (that is the ALU).

Do not accept answers about holding data or the results of instructions (that is registers/main memory).

Do not accept generic answers that only say the CU controls the CPU or processes instructions, with no linked development.

Only award one mark for a response that only repeats that the CU sends control signals; the second mark needs a linked outcome such as coordination, a memory read/write, or fetching an instruction.

Do not accept 'during the decode stage' as the development for the decoding point, as it restates the question.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It decodes the instruction that has been fetched so that it knows which operation the CPU must carry out and which components should do it.

Why: Decoding named with the acceptable wording 'each (fetched) instruction' (1), plus the linked development that this identifies the operation and components (1).

Some marks1/2

It decodes each instruction during the decode stage of the cycle.

Why: Earns (1) for decoding the instruction. 'During the decode stage' restates the question and is not accepted as a development, so the second mark is not earned.

No marks0/2

It carries out the calculations and comparisons when the instruction is executed.

Why: Calculations and comparisons are the ALU's role, which the 'Do not accept' line rules out, so no mark is earned.

3Describe2 marksEmbedded Systems Swap Remove

Many modern devices contain embedded systems.

Describe what is meant by the term embedded system.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • It is a computer/processor built into a larger device (1) to carry out a single dedicated task/function (1)
  • It is a combination of a processor, memory and input/output in one unit (1) that controls the device it is part of (1)
  • It is a computer that forms part of another device (1) so it is not used as a general purpose computer (1)

Allow 'forms part of another device' or 'inside another device' for the first mark.

Do not award the second mark for a separate fact that is not linked to the first point, e.g. 'It is built into a device and it uses little power' would earn only the first mark (1).

Do not accept 'a small computer' on its own, with no reference to being part of another device or performing a dedicated task.

Do not accept 'a computer that controls a device' on its own, with no reference to it being built into/part of a larger device or carrying out a dedicated task.

Do not accept 'it performs a single dedicated task' on its own, with no reference to it being built into/part of a larger device.

Do not accept descriptions of a general purpose computer, e.g. 'it can run many different programs' or 'new software can be installed'.

Do not accept 'it is a system that is embedded in another system' as this repeats the term in the question.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

An embedded system is a computer built into a larger device to carry out one specific/dedicated task

Why: Linked point (1) that it is built into a larger device, developed (1) with the dedicated task it performs.

Some marks1/2

It is a small computer that is inside another device.

Why: First point only (1) - inside/part of another device - with no linked development of a dedicated task.

No marks0/2

It is a computer that controls a device.

Why: Near-miss: only says it controls a device, with no reference to being built into/part of a larger device or a dedicated task, so no marks.

4Explain2 marksSecondary Memory Swap Remove

A Blu-ray disc and a CD are the same physical size.

Explain why a Blu-ray disc can store more data than a CD.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • The pits and lands on a Blu-ray disc are smaller/closer together (1) because the blue laser has a shorter wavelength than the infrared laser used by a CD (1)
  • More pits and lands can be stored in the same length of track (1) because the blue laser has a shorter wavelength, so it can focus on a smaller area/read smaller details (1)
  • A blue laser can focus on a smaller area (1) so smaller pits and lands can be used, allowing more data to be stored on the disc (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not accept 'a Blu-ray is newer/better' or 'a Blu-ray has more space/bigger storage' without a linked reason about the laser/pits and lands.

Do not accept answers about read/write speed, for example 'a Blu-ray spins faster', because the question asks about the amount of data stored, not how quickly it is read.

Do not award 'a Blu-ray disc can have more layers' on its own as the reason; it must be linked to the smaller pits and lands/shorter wavelength of the laser.

Do not accept 'red laser' for a CD; a CD uses an infrared laser (red is used by DVD).

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

A Blu-ray is read with a blue laser which has a shorter wavelength so the pits and lands on the disc can be smaller and more of them fit on the disc.

Why: Linked point (1) shorter wavelength of the blue laser with reason (1) smaller pits and lands so more data fits on the same disc.

Some marks1/2

The pits and lands on a Blu-ray are smaller than the ones on a CD so it can store more data.

Why: Point (1) that the pits and lands are smaller, but the second part repeats the question and does not give the linked reason (shorter wavelength of the blue laser/infrared CD laser), so only one mark.

No marks0/2

A Blu-ray spins faster than a CD so more data can be read from it in the same time.

Why: Do not accept answers about read/write speed; the question asks about the amount of data stored, not how quickly it is read.
