1Short recall2 marksMemory Management Swap Remove

The operating system keeps a record of where each program and its data are stored in main memory.

State two reasons why the operating system needs this record.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • So that it does not overwrite/use memory that is already being used by another program (1)
  • So that it can find the program/data again when the program needs it (1)
  • So that it knows which memory locations are free/can be allocated to a new program (1)
  • So that it can keep the data used by each program separate from other programs (1)
  • So that it can free the memory when the program is closed/knows which memory to release (1)

Do not accept 'so the program runs faster'.

Do not accept 'so that the program is not lost when the power is turned off' (this is about saving files to secondary storage, not main memory).

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

So that the operating system does not put a new program on top of memory that another program is already using, and so that it can find the data again when the program needs it.

Why: Creditworthy point 'does not overwrite memory used by another program' (1) and 'find the program/data again when needed' (1).

Some marks1/2

It knows where the program is so it can find it again when it needs to run it.

Why: Creditworthy point 'find the program/data again when it is needed' (1); no second reason given.

No marks0/2

So that the program is not lost when the computer is switched off.

Why: This is about saving to secondary storage, not about a record of main memory locations; not a creditworthy reason, so no marks.

2Short recall2 marksPurpose & Function of Operating Systems Swap Remove

A computer can run more than one process at a time.

Give two tasks carried out by the process management function of an operating system.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Deciding which process runs next on the CPU/scheduling processes (1)
  • Allocating processor/CPU time to processes/allowing multitasking (1)
  • Managing the process life-cycle/process states (ready, running, blocked) (1)
  • Handling interrupts so a running process is suspended and another can run (1)
  • Stopping/terminating a process when it has finished (1)

Do not accept 'managing processes' on its own.

Do not accept 'handling interrupts' on its own.

Do not award two marks for the same task expressed twice, e.g. 'deciding which process runs next' and 'scheduling processes', or 'allocating CPU time' and 'giving each process a share of processor time'.

Do not accept 'managing memory/memory management', 'managing files/file management' or 'managing devices/peripherals' (these are other functions of an operating system).

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Deciding which process runs next on the CPU and stopping a process when it has finished.

Why: Scheduling a process (1) and terminating a process (1) are two different named tasks.

Some marks1/2

Deciding which process runs next and scheduling processes.

Why: Both points are the same task expressed twice, so only one mark is awarded under the guidance.

No marks0/2

Managing processes and managing files.

Why: 'Managing processes' repeats the question and earns nothing; 'managing files' is file management, not process management, so it is not credited.

3Explain2 marksProcess Management Swap Remove

A user opens a web browser.

Explain what the operating system does to get the browser's process ready to run.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • A process is created for the program (1) so that its instructions can be loaded into RAM (1)
  • The process is put into the ready state (1) so that it can wait for the CPU to become available (1)
  • The operating system adds the process to a queue of ready processes (1) so the scheduler can choose it when the CPU is free (1)
  • The operating system allocates the resources the process needs (1) so that it can start running when it is given CPU time (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow 'main memory' for RAM.

Do not accept 'the browser is downloaded/loaded from the internet'.

Do not accept 'the program is run immediately on the CPU' without the ready step.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It creates a process and loads the browser's instructions into RAM, then puts the process in the ready state to wait for CPU time.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1).

Some marks1/2

It moves the program into RAM.

Why: A correct point (1) but no linked reason about the process being made ready.

No marks0/2

It runs the program straight away on the CPU.

Why: This describes the running state, not making the process ready, so no credit.
