1Describe2 marksMemory Management Swap Remove

An operating system keeps a record of the memory it has allocated to each program.

Describe how this record is used.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • The start and end address/size of the block allocated to each program is recorded (1) so the operating system knows which areas of main memory are in use and which are free (1)
  • The record is checked before memory is allocated (1) so memory already in use is not given to another program/is not overwritten (1)
  • The record is searched for a free block that is large enough (1) so a newly loaded program is placed in a suitable area of main memory (1)
  • The record is updated when a program ends/closes (1) so the memory it was using is marked as free for other programs (1)

Allow the record to be called a memory map/memory table/allocation table.

A response that only says the operating system keeps a record/list of the memory each program is using, without saying what the record contains, earns 0 marks.

A response that states what the record contains, e.g. the addresses/the start and end address of each block, earns 1 mark even if it does not say how the record is used.

Do not accept responses about saving programs/files to secondary storage or about moving programs to virtual memory, as these are not uses of this record.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The operating system records the start and end address of the block of memory given to each program so that it does not give the same memory to another program.

Why: The start and end address of each block is recorded (1) linked to memory already in use not being given to another program (1).

Some marks1/2

The operating system records the start and end address of the memory used by each program.

Why: States what the record contains (1), but does not develop how the record is used, so the second mark is not earned.

No marks0/2

The operating system saves the programs to the hard disk so there is enough memory for other programs.

Why: Describes moving programs to secondary storage rather than how the record of allocated memory is used; no creditworthy point is made.

2Describe2 marksProcess Management Swap Remove

A process ends when its program closes or finishes.

Describe how the operating system terminates a process.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Frees/releases the memory/RAM used by the process (1) so other processes can use it (1)
  • Removes the process from the ready queue/scheduler (1) so it is no longer selected to run on the CPU (1)
  • Releases other resources (files/peripherals) held by the process (1) so they can be used by other processes (1)
  • Removes/updates the process entry in the process table (1) to show the process is no longer running (1)

Allow 'process queue' / 'queue of processes' for ready queue/scheduler.

Allow 'program' for process.

Do not accept responses that only restate that the process/program has ended/closed.

Do not accept responses that only say the process stops running / the computer stops using the program, with no linked description.

Do not accept responses that say the program/file is deleted from storage or that the user closed/deleted the program.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It frees the memory the process was using so other processes can use it.

Why: Frees memory (1) linked to other processes using it (1).

Some marks1/2

It removes the process from the queue.

Why: One creditworthy point about removing from the queue (1), but no linked development.

No marks0/2

It deletes the program from the hard drive.

Why: Terminating a process does not delete the program file; no creditworthy point.

3Explain2 marksPurpose & Function of Operating Systems Swap Remove

A school has bought a new printer for one of its computers.

Explain one reason why an operating system needs peripheral management.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • The operating system uses the printer's device driver to communicate with the printer (1) so the print job is sent as commands the printer can carry out (1)
  • The operating system holds print jobs in a queue/buffer (1) because the computer sends data faster than the printer can print it (1)
  • The operating system reports the printer's status to the user (1) so the user knows what to do when there is a problem such as the paper running out (1)
  • The operating system handles interrupts/signals from the printer (1) so a problem such as a paper jam is dealt with while other programs carry on running (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow a point about the operating system loading/installing the device driver for a new printer (1) provided the second mark gives a reason that is not the same as the driver communication point, e.g. so the new printer can be used/controlled by the operating system (1)

Award 1 mark for stating that print jobs are held in a queue/a buffer; the second mark needs the linked reason that the printer prints more slowly than data is sent.

Do not accept restating the question, e.g. 'it manages the printer' or 'it controls the peripherals', without saying how or why.

Do not accept 'it lets the printer connect to the computer' or 'it stops the printer being damaged' without a linked reason.

Do not accept 'it makes the printer print faster' as the operating system cannot increase the printer's speed.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The operating system uses the printer's device driver to send the print job so the printer receives the data as commands it can understand.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1): device driver used to communicate, and the job is sent as commands the printer can carry out.

Some marks1/2

It puts print jobs into a queue.

Why: Point (1) only: the queue/buffer is named, but no linked reason (that the printer prints more slowly than data is sent) is given.

No marks0/2

It makes the printer print faster.

Why: Misconception named in the 'Do not accept' line: the operating system cannot increase the printer's speed, so there is no creditworthy point.
