1Describe2 marksMemory Management Swap Remove

A program is stored on secondary storage before it is run.

Describe how the operating system manages memory when a program is started.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • The program (and its data) is copied/loaded from secondary storage into main memory/RAM (1) so that the CPU can fetch/execute its instructions (1)
  • An area of main memory is allocated/reserved for the program (1) that is large enough to hold the program and its data (1)
  • The operating system checks that there is enough free main memory (1) before the program can be started/loaded, otherwise it cannot run/an error is reported (1)
  • The operating system keeps a record of the memory addresses used by the program (1) so that its instructions and data can be found when it runs (1)

Allow 'loaded into RAM', 'stored in memory' and 'put into main memory' as equivalent to copied into main memory.

A single statement that the program is loaded/stored in main memory, with no linked development, can be given one mark only.

Do not accept descriptions of the CPU fetching/executing instructions that do not refer to the operating system loading or allocating memory.

Do not accept responses about virtual memory (moving processes to secondary storage) or about which process runs next on the CPU.

Do not accept the program being run from secondary storage/hard disk.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The operating system copies the program and its data from secondary storage into main memory so that the CPU can fetch and execute its instructions.

Why: Copying the program and data into main memory (1) linked to the CPU fetching/executing instructions (1).

Some marks1/2

The operating system loads the program into main memory.

Why: The program is copied/loaded into main memory (1), but there is no linked development of how or what this leads to, so only one mark is given.

No marks0/2

The CPU fetches the program's instructions from main memory and executes them one at a time.

Why: This describes the fetch-decode-execute cycle, not the operating system loading or allocating memory, which is the Do not accept line; no creditworthy point is made.

2Explain2 marksPeripheral Management Swap Remove

An operating system manages the peripherals connected to a computer.

Explain one reason why an operating system needs to manage peripheral devices.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • Data is sent to/received from the correct peripheral (1) because the operating system controls the transfer of data between the computer and each device (1)
  • A new peripheral can be used as soon as it is connected (1) because the operating system installs/loads the correct device driver for that device (1)
  • Data can be sent to a slow peripheral such as a printer (1) because the operating system stores it in a buffer/print queue until the device is ready to receive it (1)
  • The user is told when a peripheral has a problem (1) because the operating system receives status information from the device and reports the error to the user (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow specific peripherals as the example (e.g. a mouse, a printer) provided the reason says what the operating system does.

Allow 'the operating system responds to an interrupt from a device' as a point, with the reason that the device is signalling that it needs attention/has finished its job.

Do not accept 'the operating system manages/controls the peripherals' or 'it lets the devices be used'/'the peripherals work correctly' on their own, as these repeat the question without saying what the operating system does.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

So that data is sent to the correct peripheral because the operating system controls the transfer of data between the computer and each device.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1).

Some marks1/2

So that data is sent to the correct device.

Why: Point (1) but no linked reason, so the second mark is not awarded.

No marks0/2

Because the operating system manages the peripherals.

Why: Rewords the question; the 'Do not accept' line says this earns nothing without saying what the operating system does.

3Explain2 marksUser Management Swap Remove

A college computer room has computers that many students share.

Explain one reason why each student has their own user account.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • Each student's files/work are kept separate (1) because the operating system checks the access rights of the user who is logged in, so other students cannot open/see/change/delete them (1)
  • A student's own settings/desktop are loaded when they log in (1) because the operating system stores settings for each user account (1)
  • Students cannot install software or change system settings (1) because their user account does not have administrator privileges (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Award 1 mark for a correct point on its own, even if no linked reason is given.

Allow answers about personal settings/desktop/wallpaper being saved/loaded for that user.

Allow answers about a standard user account not having administrator privileges.

Do not accept 'so they can log in' on its own, because logging in is what the user account is for.

Do not accept 'so they can save files/work' on its own without saying other students cannot access their files.

Do not accept 'so the computer is secure' without saying what is protected or who is kept out.

Do not accept answers about stopping viruses or making the computer run faster.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Each student has their own account so their files are kept separate from everyone else's. When they log in, the operating system checks their access rights, so another student cannot open or delete their work.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1): files/work are kept separate because the operating system checks the logged-in user's access rights, so other students cannot open/change/delete them.

Some marks1/2

Each student's work is kept separate so they can save more files on the computer.

Why: Correct point (1) that work is kept separate, but the reason 'so they can save more files' is not linked to user management/access rights and does not say other students cannot access the files, so no second mark.

No marks0/2

So that the computer does not get a virus from other students.

Why: No credit: stopping viruses is not a reason for separate user accounts, and no user-management point or linked reason is given.
