1Describe2 marksFile Management Swap Remove

A user deletes an unwanted file from their computer.

Describe what happens when the file is deleted.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • The file's entry is removed from the folder/directory (1) so the file no longer appears in the list of files/is no longer listed (1)
  • The (disk) space used by the file is marked as free/available/unused (1) so another file can be saved/stored in that space (1)
  • The file's data/contents are not erased/removed (1) so the file may still be recovered until the space is overwritten (1)

A point stated without development, e.g. 'the file is removed from the folder', earns one mark only.

For the first mark, accept that the file's entry is removed from the folder/directory; the second mark must state that the file no longer appears/is listed.

Do not accept 'stays on disk' alone for the third point; accept 'data is not erased' or 'contents remain'.

Do not accept 'the file is wiped from the disk straight away' or 'the data is destroyed and can never be recovered'.

Do not accept 'the file is moved to the recycle bin/bin' or 'the file is deleted from the hard drive' on its own, as this does not describe what happens to the file or the disk space.

Do not accept responses about moving the file to another folder.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The space the file used is marked as free so another file can be saved in that space.

Why: Linked point (1) and development (1): space marked free and another file can be saved.

Some marks1/2

The file is removed from the folder.

Why: Point (1) only; no development about the file no longer being listed.

No marks0/2

The data is wiped from the disk straight away so it can never be recovered.

Why: Common misconception; 'wiped straight away' is not accepted, so no mark.

2Explain2 marksMemory Management Swap Remove

When a program closes, the operating system frees the main memory it was using.

Explain one reason why the operating system frees main memory when a program closes.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • The memory can be reused/allocated to another program (1) so other programs have enough main memory to run (1)
  • Freeing the memory stops main memory becoming full (1) so the computer can load/run new programs (1)
  • The closed program's data is no longer needed (1) so keeping it would waste main memory (1)
  • The operating system can give the freed memory to a program that needs more (1) so that program can continue to run (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not accept 'to make the computer faster' on its own without saying how freeing memory helps.

Do not accept 'to delete the program' or 'to save the program' because closing a program does not remove it from secondary storage.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The memory can be reused by another program, so other programs have enough main memory to run.

Why: Linked point (1) about reusing the memory and reason (1) that other programs then have enough memory.

Some marks1/2

So that the memory is free.

Why: Gives the point (1) but does not give a linked reason saying what the free memory is used for.

No marks0/2

So the program is deleted from the computer.

Why: No creditworthy point; closing a program does not delete it from secondary storage.

3Explain2 marksSoftware Basics Swap Remove

A school keeps students' work on a computer network. The school uses backup software.

Explain one benefit of using backup software.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • Lost/damaged files can be restored (1) because a copy is stored separately from the original (1)
  • Data can be recovered after a hardware failure (1) because a duplicate copy is kept on another storage device/location (1)
  • Files can be recovered if they are deleted by accident (1) because a copy was made before they were deleted (1)
  • A previous version of a file can be recovered (1) because backups are made regularly/at set times (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

A benefit stated on its own, such as 'lost files can be restored', earns the first mark only.

Do not accept a description of what backup software does, such as 'it makes a copy of the files' or 'it backs up files', without a benefit it provides.

Do not accept 'keeps data safe' or 'stops files being lost' on its own without saying how the data can be recovered.

Do not accept protection from malware/viruses, e.g. 'it protects the computer from viruses'; that is the purpose of anti-malware software.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Lost files can be restored because a copy of them is stored on another device.

Why: Point (1) for lost files being restored and linked reason (1) because a copy is stored separately.

Some marks1/2

A previous version of a file can be recovered.

Why: A benefit on its own (1); no linked reason saying how the previous version is kept, so the second mark is not earned.

No marks0/2

It protects the computer from viruses.

Why: Describes anti-malware software, not backup software; no credit.
