1Describe2 marksFile Management Swap Remove

A user deletes an unwanted file from their computer.

Describe what happens when the file is deleted.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • The file's entry is removed from the folder/directory (1) so the file no longer appears in the list of files/is no longer listed (1)
  • The (disk) space used by the file is marked as free/available/unused (1) so another file can be saved/stored in that space (1)
  • The file's data/contents are not erased/removed (1) so the file may still be recovered until the space is overwritten (1)

A point stated without development, e.g. 'the file is removed from the folder', earns one mark only.

For the first mark, accept that the file's entry is removed from the folder/directory; the second mark must state that the file no longer appears/is listed.

Do not accept 'stays on disk' alone for the third point; accept 'data is not erased' or 'contents remain'.

Do not accept 'the file is wiped from the disk straight away' or 'the data is destroyed and can never be recovered'.

Do not accept 'the file is moved to the recycle bin/bin' or 'the file is deleted from the hard drive' on its own, as this does not describe what happens to the file or the disk space.

Do not accept responses about moving the file to another folder.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The space the file used is marked as free so another file can be saved in that space.

Why: Linked point (1) and development (1): space marked free and another file can be saved.

Some marks1/2

The file is removed from the folder.

Why: Point (1) only; no development about the file no longer being listed.

No marks0/2

The data is wiped from the disk straight away so it can never be recovered.

Why: Common misconception; 'wiped straight away' is not accepted, so no mark.

2Describe2 marksMemory Management Swap Remove

A user closes a program that is running on a computer.

Describe how the operating system manages the main memory that the program was using.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • The memory (that was) used by the program is freed/released/marked as free (1) so it can be allocated/reused by another program/process (1)
  • The operating system's memory allocation table/record (of memory in use) is updated (1) to show that the program's memory locations/blocks are now free/available (1)
  • The program's instructions/data are removed/overwritten in main memory (1) so the space they used is no longer reserved for that program (1)
  • The memory pages/blocks allocated to the program are returned to the list of free pages/blocks (1) that can be used when the next program is loaded (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not award two marks for the same idea described twice (e.g. the memory is freed and added to a list of free blocks); the two marks must come from two different linked descriptions.

Do not accept responses about closing the program window, stopping/terminating the program/process, saving the file or deleting the program from secondary storage/the hard disk.

Ignore statements that main memory is 'managed'/'cleaned up' with no development.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The operating system updates its memory allocation table to show that the memory locations the program was using are now free, so another program can be loaded into them.

Why: The memory allocation table/record is updated (1) linked to showing the program's memory locations are now free/available (1).

Some marks1/2

The operating system frees up the memory the program was using.

Why: The memory used by the program is freed/released (1), but there is no linked development of what this allows.

No marks0/2

The operating system deletes the program from the hard disk to free up memory.

Why: This confuses main memory with secondary storage; deleting the program from secondary storage is named in the 'Do not accept' line, so no creditworthy point is made.

3Describe2 marksUtility Software Swap Remove

A hard disk can become fragmented as files are saved and deleted.

Describe how disk defragmentation software improves the performance of a hard disk.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Parts of a file are moved so they are stored together/in consecutive locations (1) so the read/write head has less distance to travel to read the file (1)
  • Files are rearranged so that each file is stored in one block (1) which reduces the time taken to open/load the file (1)
  • Free space on the disk is collected into one area (1) so new files can be saved without becoming fragmented (1)
  • The parts of each fragmented file are put in order (1) so fewer movements of the read/write head are needed to read it (1)

Do not accept responses about compressing files, deleting files or increasing the amount of storage, as these are not what defragmentation software does.

Do not accept 'it makes the disk faster' without saying how the files are changed.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It moves the parts of a file so they are stored together in consecutive locations, so the read/write head does not have to move as far and the file opens more quickly.

Why: Linked point (1) and development (1): the file parts are stored together, which reduces read/write head movement.

Some marks1/2

It reorganises the files on the hard disk so that they are stored together.

Why: The point is made (1) but there is no development saying how this improves performance, so the second mark is not awarded.

No marks0/2

It compresses the files so that they take up less space on the disk.

Why: This describes data compression software, which the mark scheme says is not accepted; no creditworthy point is made.

4Explain2 marksPeripheral Management Swap Remove

A new printer is connected to a computer.

Explain the purpose of a device driver.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • It allows the operating system/OS to communicate with the device/printer (1) because it translates the commands into signals the device understands (1)
  • It contains/sends the instructions/commands needed by a particular device (1) so the device carries out the correct actions (1)
  • It controls the device/printer (1) by sending commands/signals to it (1)
  • Different devices need different commands (1) so each one needs its own driver to work with the operating system (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not accept 'it drives/controls the device' on its own without saying how, e.g. by sending commands/signals.

Do not accept hardware/a physical device (a device driver is software).

Do not accept 'it connects the printer to the computer' or 'it installs the printer' without saying that it provides the instructions/commands for the device.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It allows the operating system to send commands to the printer because it translates them into signals that the printer understands.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1).

Some marks1/2

It contains the instructions that the printer needs.

Why: Point (1) but no linked reason.

No marks0/2

It is a piece of hardware that connects the printer to the computer.

Why: Misconception: a device driver is software, not hardware, and saying it connects the printer is not accepted without saying it provides the instructions/commands.

5Explain2 marksPurpose & Function of Operating Systems Swap Remove

A school has bought a new printer for one of its computers.

Explain one reason why an operating system needs peripheral management.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • The operating system uses the printer's device driver to communicate with the printer (1) so the print job is sent as commands the printer can carry out (1)
  • The operating system holds print jobs in a queue/buffer (1) because the computer sends data faster than the printer can print it (1)
  • The operating system reports the printer's status to the user (1) so the user knows what to do when there is a problem such as the paper running out (1)
  • The operating system handles interrupts/signals from the printer (1) so a problem such as a paper jam is dealt with while other programs carry on running (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Allow a point about the operating system loading/installing the device driver for a new printer (1) provided the second mark gives a reason that is not the same as the driver communication point, e.g. so the new printer can be used/controlled by the operating system (1)

Award 1 mark for stating that print jobs are held in a queue/a buffer; the second mark needs the linked reason that the printer prints more slowly than data is sent.

Do not accept restating the question, e.g. 'it manages the printer' or 'it controls the peripherals', without saying how or why.

Do not accept 'it lets the printer connect to the computer' or 'it stops the printer being damaged' without a linked reason.

Do not accept 'it makes the printer print faster' as the operating system cannot increase the printer's speed.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The operating system uses the printer's device driver to send the print job so the printer receives the data as commands it can understand.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1): device driver used to communicate, and the job is sent as commands the printer can carry out.

Some marks1/2

It puts print jobs into a queue.

Why: Point (1) only: the queue/buffer is named, but no linked reason (that the printer prints more slowly than data is sent) is given.

No marks0/2

It makes the printer print faster.

Why: Misconception named in the 'Do not accept' line: the operating system cannot increase the printer's speed, so there is no creditworthy point.
