1Multiple choice1 markFetch Decode Execute Cycle Swap Remove

Identify the CPU component that decodes instructions during the fetch-decode-execute cycle.

[1 mark]
  • AArithmetic logic unit
  • BControl unit
  • CMain memory
  • DRegister
Mark scheme
  • B Control unit (1)
  • The only correct answer is B. The correct answer is control unit.
  • A is not correct because the arithmetic logic unit performs arithmetic and logical operations, not decoding
  • C is not correct because main memory stores instructions and data, not decoding
  • D is not correct because a register holds data or addresses temporarily, not decoding
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

B Control unit

Why: Correct option: the control unit decodes instructions (1).

No marks0/1

D Register

Why: Near-miss: a register holds data or addresses temporarily, it does not decode instructions (0).

No marks0/1

A Arithmetic logic unit

Why: Misconception: the arithmetic logic unit performs arithmetic and logical operations; it does not decode (0).

2Short recall2 marksFetch Decode Execute Cycle Swap Remove

The control unit is one component of the CPU.

Give two roles of the control unit during the fetch-decode-execute cycle.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Decodes the instruction / works out what the instruction is (1)
  • Sends control signals to the other components (of the CPU) (1)
  • Coordinates/controls the activities of the CPU (1)
  • Directs the timing of the other components / controls when each component acts (1)

Do not accept carrying out arithmetic or logical operations, as this is the role of the ALU.

Do not accept holding/storing the data or instructions, as this is the role of the registers/main memory.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It decodes each instruction and sends control signals to the other components to tell them what to do.

Why: Decodes the instruction (1) and sends control signals to the other components (1).

Some marks1/2

It decodes the instructions and carries out the calculations.

Why: Decoding the instruction (1); the calculations are carried out by the ALU, so the second part earns nothing.

No marks0/2

It stores the data that the CPU is working on.

Why: Storing data is the role of the registers/main memory, not the control unit, so no point is creditworthy.

3Calculate2 marksAdding Binary Numbers Swap Remove

Computers manipulate binary patterns.

Complete the table to show the result of the 8-bit binary addition.

01001111
Mark scheme

Award one mark for each correct nibble in the correct order:

  • 1110 (1)
  • 0100 (1)

0 marks if the response is not 8-bit binary.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

1110 0100

Why: 149 + 79 = 228, carrying where a column adds to 2: both nibbles are correct (2).

Some marks1/2

1110 0101

Why: A slip in the last bit. The first nibble is correct (1); the second is not.

No marks0/2

1101 1111

Why: Writes 1 in every column with a 1 and never carries. Neither nibble is correct.
