1Multiple choice1 markCompression Swap Remove

Identify the statement that describes lossless compression.

[1 mark]
  • AData is encrypted so that it cannot be read by others
  • BData is permanently removed to make the file smaller
  • CNo data is lost and the original file can be recreated
  • DThe file is split into packets that are sent separately
Mark scheme
  • C No data is lost and the original file can be recreated (1)
  • The only correct answer is C. The correct answer is no data is lost and the original file can be recreated.
  • A is not correct because encryption hides data and does not make the file smaller
  • B is not correct because permanently removing data is lossy compression
  • D is not correct because splitting a file into packets is part of transmission, not compression
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

C No data is lost and the original file can be recreated

Why: Correct option (1).

No marks0/1

B Data is permanently removed to make the file smaller

Why: Near miss: this is lossy compression, not lossless, so no mark.

No marks0/1

D The file is split into packets that are sent separately

Why: Misconception that compression is packet switching; no mark.

2Short recall2 marksWired Connections Swap Remove

A company can choose between two wired connections. Connection B has a higher bandwidth than connection A.

Give two benefits to the company of choosing connection B.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • Files/data download/upload more quickly (1)
  • More employees can use the connection at the same time without it slowing down (1)
  • Web pages/streamed video load more quickly with less buffering (1)
  • Video calls/conferencing run at a higher quality (1)
  • Updates/backups can be completed in less time (1)

Allow 'multiple users' or 'more devices' for the shared-use point

Allow 'video streams more quickly' or 'less buffering' on their own

Do not accept lower latency, as a higher bandwidth does not reduce latency

Do not accept 'more data can be transferred per second' or 'a bigger bandwidth', as these repeat what bandwidth is

Do not accept 'more reliable' on its own, as a higher bandwidth does not make a wired connection more reliable

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Files will download more quickly, and more employees can use the internet at the same time without the connection slowing down.

Why: Files download more quickly (1) and more users without slowdown (1).

Some marks1/2

Web pages will load faster and the connection will have a longer range.

Why: Web pages load faster (1); the range of a connection is not increased by bandwidth, so that point is not credited.

No marks0/2

The connection will be more reliable because it has a bigger bandwidth.

Why: 'More reliable' is not credited on its own and 'bigger bandwidth' repeats the question, so no marks.

3Short recall2 marksImages Swap Remove

Bitmap images are stored as a grid of pixels.

Define the term pixel.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • The smallest element/area of a bitmap image (1)
  • The smallest identifiable part of an image (1)
  • Stores/represents a single colour as a binary value (1)
  • Stores/represents a single colour using a number of bits/colour depth (1)

Allow 'picture element' for element/part in the first two bullets, but not on its own

Allow 'bit depth' for colour depth

Do not accept 'picture element'/'pixel' on its own

Do not accept 'a group of pixels' or 'a dot' on its own; allow 'dot' only when it is described as the smallest element/area of the image

Do not accept 'single colour' on its own for the second mark; it must be linked to a binary value/number of bits

Do not accept 'lots of coloured dots' (it contradicts a single colour)

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The smallest identifiable area of a bitmap image, which has one colour stored as a binary value.

Why: Smallest identifiable area (1) and single colour stored as a binary value (1)

Some marks1/2

The smallest part of a bitmap image, made of one colour.

Why: Smallest part (1); no credit for the second mark because the single colour is not linked to a binary value or number of bits

No marks0/2

A picture element made from lots of coloured dots.

Why: 'Picture element' on its own is not accepted and 'lots of coloured dots' contradicts a single colour
