1Multiple choice1 markEmbedded Systems Swap Remove

Modern cars contain many embedded systems.

Identify what the embedded system that controls the cruise control does.

[1 mark]
  • AIt controls the interior lights
  • BIt displays a map for the driver
  • CIt keeps the car at a constant speed
  • DIt sounds an alarm if the car is broken into
Mark scheme
  • C It keeps the car at a constant speed (1)
  • The only correct answer is C. The correct answer is it keeps the car at a constant speed.
  • A is not correct because controlling the interior lights is done by a different embedded system in the car
  • B is not correct because displaying a map for the driver is done by the satellite navigation system
  • D is not correct because sounding an alarm is done by a different embedded system in the car
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

C It keeps the car at a constant speed

Why: Correct option: this is the function of the embedded system that controls the cruise control (1).

No marks0/1

B It displays a map for the driver

Why: Near miss: displaying a map is the function of the satellite navigation system, which the mark scheme says is not correct, so no mark.

No marks0/1

A It controls the interior lights

Why: Misconception: the interior lights are controlled by a different embedded system, so no mark.

2Short recall2 marksPrimary Memory Swap Remove

An application's instructions and data are copied from secondary storage into RAM before it runs.

Give two reasons why the instructions and data are copied into RAM rather than being read directly from secondary storage.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • RAM can be accessed/read (much) faster than secondary storage / secondary storage is (much) slower than RAM (1)
  • The CPU would have to wait/idle if instructions and data were read directly from secondary storage (1)
  • The CPU can access RAM directly / RAM is directly accessible to the CPU (1)

Allow hard disk / hard drive / SSD for secondary storage.

Do not accept RAM is volatile / so that instructions and data are not lost when the power is switched off.

Do not accept the computer runs faster / has more storage (without reference to the CPU accessing instructions and data).

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

RAM can be accessed much faster than secondary storage, so the CPU would have to wait for its instructions if they were read from the hard disk.

Why: Creditworthy point that RAM is accessed/read faster than secondary storage (1) and the linked point that the CPU would wait/idle without this (1).

Some marks1/2

RAM can be read faster than the hard disk.

Why: Gives one creditworthy reason, that RAM is accessed/read faster than secondary storage (1), but does not say why this matters to the CPU, so the second mark is not earned.

No marks0/2

So that the data is not lost when the computer is switched off.

Why: RAM is volatile, so keeping data when the power is off is not a reason for using RAM; this is the misconception in the Do not accept line and scores nothing.

3Describe2 marksUtility Software Swap Remove

A computer can lose power while a file is being saved.

Describe what file repair software does.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked description such as:

  • Attempts to repair/rebuild the corrupted file (1) so that it can be opened by its program again (1)
  • Recovers/retrieves the parts of the file that can still be read (1) so that the user does not lose all of the data in the file (1)
  • Reconstructs the file from data held in other parts of the disk (1) because part of the file/the disk is corrupted (1)
  • Saves a new/repaired copy of the file (1) as some of the data in it may not be recoverable (1)

Do not accept 'it repairs the file' on its own, as this repeats the question.

Do not accept responses about restoring a backup/previous version of the file, as this is backup software.

Do not accept responses about scanning for or removing malware.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

It recovers the parts of the file that can still be read (1) so that the user does not lose everything that was saved in it (1).

Why: The point (1) and a linked development giving the effect (1).

Some marks1/2

It rebuilds the damaged file from other parts of the disk.

Why: A valid point is made (1) but there is no development of what this achieves, so the second mark is not awarded.

No marks0/2

It restores the last backup of the file so the user gets the data back.

Why: This describes backup software, which the mark scheme does not accept for this question.
