1Multiple choice1 markImages Swap Remove

Identify the smallest identifiable area of a bitmap image.

[1 mark]
  • AColour depth
  • BFile size
  • CPixel
  • DResolution
Mark scheme
  • C Pixel (1)
  • The only correct answer is C. The correct answer is pixel.
  • A is not correct because colour depth is the number of bits used to store the colour of each pixel
  • B is not correct because file size is the amount of storage an image takes up, not an area of the image
  • D is not correct because resolution is a measure of the number of pixels in an image (such as its width × height), not the smallest identifiable area
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

C Pixel

Why: Correct option; a pixel is the smallest identifiable area of a bitmap image (1).

No marks0/1

D Resolution

Why: Resolution is a measure of the number of pixels in an image, not the smallest identifiable area; no mark.

No marks0/1

A Colour depth

Why: Colour depth is the number of bits used to store each pixel's colour, not the smallest identifiable area; no mark.

2Short recall1 markSound Swap Remove

A digital sound representation is created by sampling an analogue sound wave.

State one way the accuracy of this representation can be increased.

[1 mark]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following:

  • Increase the sample rate / take more samples per second (1)
  • Increase the bit depth/sample resolution / use more bits per sample (1)
  • Decrease the sample interval (1)

Do not accept increase the amplitude/volume

Do not accept decrease the sample rate / increase the sample interval

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks1/1

Increase the sample rate.

Why: Creditworthy point: increase the sample rate (1).

No marks0/1

Decrease the sample rate.

Why: Near-miss: decreasing the sample rate reduces accuracy, so no mark; the mark scheme's do-not-accept line covers this (0).

No marks0/1

Increase the volume of the sound.

Why: Misconception: loudness/amplitude is not a way to increase sampling accuracy; do not accept increase amplitude/volume (0).

3Short recall2 marksCharacter Sets Swap Remove

A computer uses a character set to represent text.

Define the term character set.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for any of the following up to a maximum of two marks:

  • A set/collection of characters (1)
  • (Characters such as) letters, digits and symbols/punctuation (1)
  • Each character is represented by a unique code/binary value (1)
  • A standard set of characters so that text can be exchanged between computer systems (1)

Allow 'a list of characters that a computer can represent' for the first mark.

Do not accept a program/software that converts text into binary.

Do not accept 'a set of binary codes' on its own.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

A set of characters, such as letters, digits and punctuation, where each character is represented by a unique binary code.

Why: Set/collection of characters with examples (1) and each character has a unique code (1).

Some marks1/2

A set of letters and symbols that a computer can use to represent text.

Why: Awarded for the set/collection of characters (1); no creditworthy point saying each character has its own unique code (0).

No marks0/2

A program that converts the keys pressed on a keyboard into binary.

Why: Describes software that converts text, not a set of characters; the Do not accept line applies.

4Explain2 marksImages Swap Remove

Two versions of the same photograph are displayed at the same size on a screen. Version A is 800 × 600 pixels. Version B is 1600 × 1200 pixels.

Explain why Version B can show more detail.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award up to two marks for a linked explanation such as:

  • Version B has more pixels in the same area (1) so each pixel represents a smaller part of the image (1)
  • Version B has a higher pixel density (1) so finer detail can be represented (1)
  • The pixels in Version B are smaller (1) so more detail can be captured in the same space (1)
  • Version B has a higher resolution (1) because there are more pixels per unit of area (1)

For both marks, the expansion must follow/associate with the statement.

Do not accept 'more pixels' on its own without saying same area/pixel density/smaller pixels.

Do not accept higher colour depth or more colours.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Version B has more pixels in the same area so each pixel represents a smaller part of the image.

Why: Linked point (1) and reason (1): more pixels in the same area means smaller pixels and more detail.

Some marks1/2

Version B has more pixels in the same area.

Why: One mark for the point about pixel density; the linked reason about smaller pixels or finer detail is missing.

No marks0/2

Version B has a higher colour depth, so it can display more colours.

Why: Colour depth is not the reason for more detail here; this is the common misconception that colour depth increases resolution.
