Harlowby Animal Sanctuary is a charity that looks after rescued animals. It wants to communicate with its supporters.

Give two communication platforms the charity could use to contact its supporters.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for each correct communication platform, up to a maximum of two marks from:

  • Website
  • Social media (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, X)
  • Email (e.g. Outlook, Gmail)
  • Voice communication/VoIP (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype)

Allow a maximum of one mark for two answers of the same platform type (e.g. Zoom and Microsoft Teams are both voice communication).

Do not accept: communication channels such as live chat, a public status update, a private/direct message, instant messaging or a text message, or devices such as a telephone – none of these is a communication platform.

Accept any other appropriate response.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Email and social media

Why: Email (1) and social media (1) are both communication platforms the charity could use.

Some marks1/2

Website and live chat

Why: Website (1) is a communication platform; live chat is a communication channel, not a platform (0).

No marks0/2

A telephone and text messages

Why: A telephone is a device and a text message is a communication channel; neither is a communication platform (0).

2State / Give two2 marks

Pellworth Dental Care is a dental practice. It uses social media to communicate with patients.

Give two types of information it should send by private/direct message rather than a public status update.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for each correct type of information, up to a maximum of two marks from:

  • Appointment date/time details
  • Appointment reminders
  • Payment details/invoices/order details
  • Customer contact details (address, phone number, email address)
  • Medical/personal information (treatment records, test results)
  • Complaints or queries about treatment
  • Details of a treatment plan/prescription
  • Staff discussions/confidential business information

Do not accept: opening times, prices or special offers as these can be shared publicly

Accept any other appropriate response.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Appointment times and payment details

Why: Appointment times (1) and payment details (1) are private information.

Some marks1/2

Opening times and a patient's home address

Why: Home address (1); opening times can be shared publicly (0).

No marks0/2

Special offers and prices

Why: Special offers and prices can be shared publicly, so neither earns a mark (0).

3State / Give two2 marks

Hazelmere Garden Rooms is a company that builds garden offices. The company wants to improve its website to communicate with customers.

Give two types of information it could include on its website.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for each correct type of information, up to a maximum of two marks from:

  • Product/service descriptions/specifications
  • Prices/costs
  • Contact details such as a phone number or email address
  • Opening times
  • Photographs/videos of finished garden rooms
  • Customer reviews/testimonials
  • Special offers/discounts
  • Company news/updates

Do not accept: communication platforms/channels such as email, social media or live chat – these are not types of information on a website

Accept any other appropriate response.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Photographs of finished garden rooms and prices for each model

Why: Photographs (1) and prices (1) are both types of information for the website.

Some marks1/2

Customer reviews and a live chat feature

Why: Customer reviews (1); a live chat feature is a communication channel, not a type of information (0).

No marks0/2

It is quicker than post and cheaper to run

Why: These are benefits of a communication method, not types of information to include on the website (0).

4Explain one2 marks

Waverley Removals is a house removals company. The company also uses public status updates on social media. Staff need to share a customer's payment details with the customer.

Explain one reason why staff should use a direct message rather than a public status update.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for the correct reason and one mark for a justification for that reason, up to a maximum of two marks.

  • A direct message is private/is only seen by the customer it is sent to (1) so the customer's payment details are not visible to anyone else (1)
  • A public status update can be seen by anyone/whoever follows the company's page (1) so the payment details could be seen by other people (1)
  • A direct message is sent to that customer's own account (1) so the company can be sure the right person receives the details (1)
  • The customer's payment details are not posted on a public page (1) so other customers of the company do not see them (1)
  • The message is not shown to other followers of the company's page (1) which keeps the customer's payment details confidential (1)
  • It is more secure (1) because only the customer it is sent to can read it (1)

Do not accept: 'it is secure' on its own

Allow mix and match if it makes sense

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

A direct message is private and is only seen by the customer it is sent to, so the payment details are not visible to anyone else.

Why: Gives the point (a direct message is private/only seen by the customer) and a justification (the details are not visible to anyone else) (1+1).

Some marks1/2

A direct message is private so it is better than a public status update.

Why: The point (private) earns its mark, but 'better' only repeats the question and gives no justification (1).

No marks0/2

Staff should use a public status update because it is quicker than a direct message.

Why: Recommends the wrong channel and gives a speed point, which does not answer why the details should be kept off a public update, so nothing is creditworthy (0).

5Explain one2 marks

Wexley Paddleboard Hire is a company that hires out paddleboards and runs lessons. Staff film each customer's first lesson and want to send the video to that customer.

Explain one reason why staff should send the video by private message rather than a public status update.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for the correct reason and one mark for a justification for that reason, up to a maximum of two marks.

  • Only that customer needs to see the video (1) as the company's other followers would not want to watch someone else's lesson (1)
  • The video is personal to the customer (1) so they may not want it shown to everyone who follows the company (1)
  • A public status update can be seen by anyone (1) which means the customer's video would not be kept private/confidential (1)
  • The customer might be embarrassed by the video (1) as they may fall off/show themselves up in it, which could lead to a complaint (1)
  • Other people could save/share a public post (1) so the company would lose control of the video/the customer's footage (1)
  • The message goes straight to the customer (1) rather than appearing in a feed where it could be missed (1)

Do not accept: 'it is private'/'it keeps the video private' on its own, as this repeats the question

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

The video is personal to that customer so they may not want everyone who follows the company to see it.

Why: Gives a reason for using a private message (1) and justifies it with the effect on the customer (1).

Some marks1/2

The company's other followers do not need to see the video so it should be sent as a private message.

Why: The reason that only that customer needs the video earns its mark (1), but the second part just repeats the question, so no justification mark is given.

No marks0/2

Staff should use a private message so that the video is private and not public.

Why: This repeats the wording of the question ('private ... not public') and gives no reason, so nothing is credited.

6Explain one2 marks

Oxley Brasserie is a family restaurant. The restaurant has created a new menu and uses social media to communicate with its customers.

Explain one benefit of using a public status update to share news of the new menu.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for the correct benefit and one mark for a justification for that benefit, up to a maximum of two marks.

  • Anyone who looks at the restaurant's page can see it (1) so more people find out about the new menu (1)
  • Customers can share/repost the update (1) which means it reaches people who do not follow the restaurant (1)
  • It can include photos of the new dishes (1) which shows customers what the meals look like/makes them want to visit (1)
  • It only has to be posted once (1) so staff save time compared with messaging each customer separately (1)
  • Customers can comment on it publicly (1) so other customers see their good feedback/the restaurant can answer questions where everyone can see (1)

Do not accept: 'it is public'/'everyone can see it' with no reason why this helps the restaurant

Allow: 'so more people see/find out about the new menu' on its own as the justification for the first point, without a comparison with private messages

Allow: 'customers can comment' (1) with a justification about other customers seeing the comments or the restaurant replying publicly (1)

Allow mix and match if it makes sense

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Customers can share the update so it reaches people who do not already follow the restaurant.

Why: Gives the benefit (sharing/reposting) (1) and a justification (it reaches people who do not follow the restaurant) (1).

Some marks1/2

It only has to be posted once so staff do not have to post it again.

Why: The benefit (only posted once) earns its mark, but the expansion just repeats it rather than saying why this helps, so the second mark is not awarded.

No marks0/2

It is public so everyone can see it.

Why: Says only that it is public and repeats that as the justification; the mark scheme does not accept this on its own.

7Explain one3 marks

Ridgeway Scaffolding is a company that erects scaffolding for building projects. Its office staff arrange jobs with customers over the phone.

Explain one benefit to Ridgeway Scaffolding of using voice communication with customers.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for a correct benefit, one mark for a justification for that benefit and one mark for an expansion of the justification, up to a maximum of three marks.

  • Staff can speak to the customer directly (1) so questions about the job can be answered straight away (1) which means the job can be booked without a delay (1)
  • Staff can hear the customer's tone of voice (1) so they can tell whether the customer understands the price (1) which reduces misunderstandings about the job (1)
  • It is a private way to communicate (1) as only the customer and the member of staff on the call hear what is said (1) so the customer's payment details are not shared publicly (1)
  • No specialist equipment is needed (1) as staff only need a phone (1) so they can call a customer from a building site (1)
  • It does not need an internet connection (1) unlike email or a video call (1) so staff can still contact customers from sites with no Wi-Fi (1)

Allow: 'phone call'/'call' for voice communication

Do not allow mix and match

Do not accept 'quicker'/'faster'/'saves time' on its own, or a justification that only repeats the benefit in different words

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

Staff can speak to the customer directly so any questions about the scaffolding can be answered there and then which means the job can be booked without waiting for a reply by email.

Why: Benefit (1), justification (1) and an expansion of the justification (1), all applied to the scaffolding company.

Some marks2/3

Staff can hear the customer's tone of voice so they can tell whether the customer is unsure about the price.

Why: A correct benefit (1) with a justification (1), but no expansion of why that matters to Ridgeway Scaffolding.

No marks0/3

It is quicker so the company saves time.

Why: 'Quicker' on its own is not credited and 'saves time' only repeats the same benefit in different words, so neither mark point is met.

8Explain one3 marks

Delphwood Catering provides food for weddings and other events. A customer has messaged the company to ask about a refund for an event they held last week.

Explain one reason the company should use a private message rather than a public status update.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for a correct reason, one mark for a justification for that reason and one mark for an expansion of the justification, up to a maximum of three marks.

  • Only that customer will see the reply (1) so their refund/payment details are not shared with everyone (1) which keeps the customer's personal data confidential (1)
  • Other customers/followers will not see the complaint (1) so the company's reputation is protected/other customers are not confused by a reply meant for someone else (1) which means it does not lose future bookings (1)
  • The reply goes straight to that customer (1) so the company knows they have received it (1) which means the refund can be sorted out more quickly (1)
  • A private message is more personal (1) so the customer feels the company is treating them as an individual (1) which helps keep them as a customer for future events (1)

Do not allow mix and match

Allow: the reason stated as an outcome, e.g. other customers will not see the complaint (1)

Do not accept: 'it is more private/secure' on its own; reasons for using a public status update

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

Only that customer will see the reply so their refund details are not shared with everyone, which keeps their personal data confidential.

Why: Reason (1), justification (1) and an expansion of the justification (1), all linked to the catering company's customer.

Some marks2/3

Only the customer will see the reply, so their refund details are not shared with everyone.

Why: A correct reason (1) with a justification (1), but no expansion of why keeping the details confidential matters.

No marks0/3

The company should post a public status update so every customer can see how good it is at giving refunds.

Why: This gives a reason for using a public status update, which is the opposite of what the question asks, so no mark point is met.

9Explain one3 marks

Larkfield Kennels looks after dogs while their owners are on holiday. The kennels has a website that it uses to communicate with its customers.

Explain one benefit to Larkfield Kennels of using its website to communicate with customers.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for a correct benefit, one mark for a justification for that benefit and one mark for an expansion of the justification, up to a maximum of three marks.

  • The website is available all the time (1) so owners can check prices and opening times whenever they like (1) which means the kennels does not need staff to answer the phone in the evening (1)
  • Photos and videos of the kennels can be posted (1) so owners can see where their dog will stay (1) which gives them confidence to book (1)
  • Information can be updated in one place (1) so the prices and dates on the site are always the latest ones (1) which reduces the number of queries the kennels has to answer (1)
  • A booking form can be added to the site (1) so owners can book a stay at any time of day (1) which brings in more bookings for the kennels (1)
  • Reviews from other owners can be shown (1) so new customers can see the kennels is trusted (1) which brings in more business (1)
  • It is cheap to run compared with printing and posting leaflets (1) as the information only has to be uploaded once (1) which saves the kennels money (1)

Do not allow mix and match

Do not accept using the website to send private/direct messages to owners, as this is not what a website does

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

The website is available all the time so owners can check opening times and prices whenever they like which means the kennels does not need staff to answer the phone in the evening.

Why: Benefit (1), justification (1) and an expansion of the justification (1), applied to the kennels.

Some marks2/3

Photos of the kennels can be put on the website so owners can see where their dog will stay.

Why: A correct benefit (1) with a justification (1), but the answer stops there without an expansion.

No marks0/3

Staff can use the website to send each owner a direct message about their dog so the information stays private between them.

Why: A website does not send private messages to individual customers, so this is not a benefit of a website and no mark point is met.

10Describe3 marks

Tolhurst Cheese Makers is a small company that produces cheese for local shops. The company has a website that lists its cheeses. Customers still phone the company to ask about prices and place orders.

Describe how Tolhurst Cheese Makers could use its website to communicate with customers.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

A description of how a website is used to communicate with customers. To include three from

  • Provide information about products/prices/stock so customers can check before ordering
  • Share news/updates/special offers with customers
  • Provide contact details/a contact form so customers can send questions
  • Collect reviews/feedback from customers
  • Customers can place orders/buy products through the website
  • Available 24/7 so customers can find information at any time

Allow: selling/ordering products online, as a way of communicating with customers.

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

The website can show product information and prices so customers know what cheese is available and how much it costs. It can also have a contact form so customers can send their questions instead of phoning. The company can post news and special offers to keep customers updated.

Why: Three creditworthy ways are described: product/price information (1), a contact form for questions (1) and news/special offers (1).

Some marks2/3

The website can show customers what products are available and it can be used 24/7 so they can look at it any time.

Why: Product information (1) and 24/7 access (1) are credited, but no third way of communicating with customers is given.

No marks0/3

The website is a good way to communicate because it is online and everyone uses the internet.

Why: No specific use of the website to communicate with customers is described; saying it is online is too vague to earn a mark.

11Describe3 marks

Thurlestone Pottery is a company that makes and sells ceramic tableware. The pottery wants to keep its customers up to date with new products and orders.

Describe how Thurlestone Pottery could use email to communicate with its customers.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

A description of how email is used to communicate with customers. To include three from

  • Send the same message/newsletter to many customers at once / using CC or a mailing list
  • Send attachments such as photos of products/order confirmations
  • Reply to customers' questions/queries
  • Keep a record of messages sent and received so the pottery can refer back to them
  • Use BCC so customers' email addresses are kept private from other customers

Do not accept answers about other communication platforms, such as a website or social media, as the question is about email.

Accept any other appropriate response

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

The pottery can send the same email to all of its customers at once using a mailing list. Staff can attach photos of new tableware to the email, and they can keep a copy of the message so they can refer back to it later.

Why: Credits sending the same message to many customers at once (1), sending attachments such as photos (1) and keeping a record to refer back to (1).

Some marks2/3

Staff can reply to customers' questions by email and keep a record of the messages they send.

Why: Credits replying to customers' questions (1) and keeping a record of messages (1), but no third point is made.

No marks0/3

The pottery could put photos of its tableware on its website so that customers can see what it makes.

Why: This describes the website, another communication platform, so no email point is credited; the mark scheme's 'Do not accept' line rules it out.

12Describe3 marks

Nancarrow Flower Farm is a business that grows and sells flowers to shops and the public. The farm deals with many customer queries each week.

Describe how the farm could use voice communication with its customers.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

A description of how voice communication can be used with customers. To include three from

  • Staff can make/receive (telephone) calls to speak to a customer directly
  • Customers can phone to place orders/ask about prices/check what is available
  • Staff can answer questions/resolve problems/complaints during the call
  • Both people can talk in real time/a two-way conversation
  • Staff can transfer a customer to another department/colleague
  • A voice message can be left if the customer does not answer

Do not accept: sending an email/posting on social media, as these are not voice communication.

Accept any other appropriate response.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

Staff can phone a customer to speak to them directly. The two people can talk to each other in real time. If the customer does not answer, staff can leave a voice message asking them to call back.

Why: Credits speaking to a customer directly by telephone (1), real-time two-way conversation (1) and leaving a voice message when the customer does not answer (1).

Some marks2/3

Staff can phone customers to speak to them directly and customers can also call the farm to place an order.

Why: Credits speaking to a customer directly (1) and customers phoning to place orders (1), but gives no third way.

No marks0/3

Staff could email the customer a price list and the customer can reply whenever they like.

Why: Describes email, which is a different communication platform and not voice communication, so no creditworthy point is given.

13Explain two4 marks

Rookfield Observatory is a science centre that runs stargazing events. It collects customers' booking details and payment information. Staff sometimes need to contact customers about these bookings.

Explain two reasons staff should use a private direct message rather than a public status update.

[4 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for each correct reason and one mark for a justification of each reason, up to a maximum of four marks.

  • Keeps the customer's booking/payment details private (1) so other people/customers cannot see them (1)
  • Keeps the customer's personal/contact details confidential (1) as the message is only visible to the customer and the staff member (1)
  • Stops other people copying or changing the booking (1) as a public status update can be seen by anyone (1)
  • Keeps the conversation about the booking between the staff member and the customer (1) so other people cannot read it or join in (1)
  • Media such as the customer's ticket/booking confirmation is sent only to that customer (1) so other people cannot see or use it (1)

Allow mix and match if the response makes sense

Do not accept 'more secure'/'safer'/'quicker' on its own as these do not state what is kept private

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks4/4

A private direct message keeps the customer's booking and payment details private so that other customers cannot see them. It also keeps the conversation about the booking between the staff member and the customer, so other people cannot read it or join in.

Why: Booking/payment details kept private (1) so others cannot see them (1); conversation kept between staff and customer (1) so others cannot read it or join in (1).

Some marks2/4

A direct message keeps the customer's personal details confidential as only the customer and the staff member can see the message. It is also quicker than a public status update because other customers do not reply to it.

Why: Personal details kept confidential (1) with justification (1); 'quicker' is not credited on its own and does not state what is kept private.

No marks0/4

A direct message is more secure so it is better for the customer. It is also quicker because the customer will reply faster instead of everyone seeing the update.

Why: 'More secure' and 'quicker' are not credited on their own; the answer never states what information is kept private.

14Discuss6 marks

Marlowe Funeral Directors arranges funerals. It communicates with grieving families about arrangements, prices and services.

Discuss the benefits to Marlowe Funeral Directors and its families of using a website to communicate.

[6 marks]
Mark scheme

Responses will be credited according to the learner’s demonstration of knowledge and understanding of the material, using the indicative content and level descriptors below.

The indicative content that follows is not prescriptive. Responses may cover some or all indicative content, but learners should be rewarded for other responses.

Discussion may consider

Company benefits

  • Available 24/7 – families can check arrangements and prices at any time, so the company appears responsive
  • Fewer routine phone calls – staff have more time to arrange funerals with families
  • Cheap to update – prices and service notices can be changed on the site rather than printed and posted
  • Professional image – a clear, well-designed site helps grieving families trust Marlowe
  • Analytics – the company can see which services and pages families look at and improve them

Family benefits

  • Prices and services shown – families can see the options and costs from home before contacting the company
  • Details at any time – relatives, including those travelling from far away, can check service times and directions
  • Contact form – families can ask private questions without details appearing on a public page
  • Photos of the premises and options – families know what to expect before they visit

Levels

  • Level 0 (0 marks): No rewardable content
  • Level 1 (1–2 marks): Demonstrates isolated elements of knowledge and understanding; there will be major gaps or omissions; Few of the points made will be relevant to the context in the question; Limited discussion which contains generic assertions rather than considering different aspects and the relationship between them
  • Level 2 (3–4 marks): Demonstrates some accurate knowledge and understanding; with only minor gaps or omissions; Some of the points made will be relevant to the context in the question, but the link will not always be clear; Displays a partially developed discussion which considers some different aspects and some consideration of how they interrelate, but not always in a sustained way
  • Level 3 (5–6 marks): Demonstrates mostly accurate and thorough/detailed knowledge and understanding; Most of the points made will be relevant to the context in the question, and there will be clear links; Displays a well-developed and logical discussion which clearly considers a range of different aspects and considers how they interrelate, in a sustained way
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks6/6

Marlowe Funeral Directors could use its website to show its services and prices, so grieving families can see the options and costs from home before they contact the company. This also means staff spend less time answering routine questions on the phone and more time arranging funerals, which is the work only they can do. Because the site is available 24/7, relatives who live far away can check service times and directions whenever they need to, and families can use a contact form to ask private questions rather than ringing the office. A clear, professional website also helps families feel they can trust the company at a difficult time. Notices and prices can be updated quickly, so the information families see is always current.

Why: Level 3 descriptors: mostly accurate and thorough knowledge; most points are relevant to the context of a funeral director and its families, with clear links (prices shown so families can plan from home, fewer phone calls so staff have more time); a well-developed and logical discussion of both company and family benefits and how they interrelate.

Some marks4/6

A website is useful because families can see the prices of the funerals before they ring the company. It is also open all the time, so people can look at it in the evening. This means the company does not have to answer as many phone calls. The website can have photos of the funeral home so families know what it looks like, and Marlowe could put directions on it. A website makes the company look professional and helps it get more customers.

Why: Level 2 descriptors: some accurate knowledge and some points relevant to the context, but the links are not always clear (photos and directions are listed without saying what they do for the family); a partially developed discussion that considers some aspects but is not sustained.

Some marks1/6

A website is good because it is free and everyone uses the internet. Marlowe could put photos of the funerals on the website so everyone in the town can see them. The company should also put all the families' details and funeral times on the website so people know what is happening, and families could leave comments about the funerals on there.

Why: Level 1 descriptors: isolated elements of knowledge with generic assertions (a website is free and everyone uses the internet); the suggestion to publish families' details and funeral photos publicly is inappropriate for a funeral director, so few points are relevant to the context.

15Evaluate6 marks

Hedgerow Pottery is a small pottery studio that runs classes and sells handmade ceramics. It wants to tell customers about classes and new ceramics. It is considering two communication platforms: email; social media.

Evaluate the suitability of the two communication platforms for Hedgerow Pottery.

Your evaluation should include:

  • the benefits and drawbacks of both options
  • a supported conclusion as to which option you think Hedgerow Pottery should use.
[6 marks]
Mark scheme

Responses will be credited according to the learner's demonstration of knowledge and understanding of the material, using the indicative content and level descriptors below.

The indicative content that follows is not prescriptive. Responses may cover some or all indicative content, but learners should be rewarded for other responses.

Evaluation may consider

Email

Benefits

  • Private/direct – class details and booking confirmations go only to the customer who has signed up.
  • Low cost – one email can reach many customers for the price of internet access.

Drawbacks

  • Junk/spam folder – class dates and new ceramics news may not be seen.
  • Only reaches people who have given an email address/have internet access – misses new customers.

Social media

Benefits

  • Wide audience – posts can be shared by people who do not yet use the studio, attracting new learners.
  • Two-way communication – customers can comment, ask about classes and leave reviews.
  • Images/videos/polls – the studio can show new ceramics and ask which classes are wanted.

Drawbacks

  • Negative comments – a public complaint could damage the studio's reputation.
  • Platform algorithms – regular customers may not see posts unless the studio pays to promote them.
  • Time – staff must post regularly and reply to comments.

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Levels

  • Level 0 (0 marks): No rewardable material
  • Level 1 (1–2 marks): Demonstrates isolated elements of knowledge and understanding; there will be major gaps or omissions; Few of the points made will be relevant to the context in the question; Limited evaluation which contains generic assertions leading to a conclusion which is partially supported
  • Level 2 (3–4 marks): Demonstrates some accurate knowledge and understanding; with only minor gaps or omissions; Some of the points made will be relevant to the context in the question, but the link will not always be clear; Displays a partially developed evaluation which considers some different competing points, although not always in detail, leading to a conclusion which is partially supported
  • Level 3 (5–6 marks): Demonstrates mostly accurate and thorough/detailed knowledge and understanding; Most of the points made will be relevant to the context in the question, and there will be clear links; Displays a well-developed and logical evaluation which clearly considers a range of different aspects and competing points, leading to a conclusion that is fully supported
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks6/6

Email would suit Hedgerow Pottery because class booking details can be sent privately to each customer, and it is cheap as one message can reach many people for the cost of internet access. However, emails often go into junk folders, so some customers would miss class dates, and the studio can only reach people who have already given an email address. Social media reaches a much wider audience because posts can be shared by people who do not yet use the studio, which could bring in new learners, and customers can comment and ask questions about classes. Photos and videos can show new ceramics to attract buyers. But negative comments are public and could damage the studio's reputation, and the platform's algorithm may stop regular customers seeing posts unless the studio pays to promote them. On balance, Hedgerow Pottery should use social media, because its main aim is to attract new customers to its classes, and it can reply quickly to any negative comments.

Why: Level 3: accurate benefits and drawbacks of both platforms are clearly linked to the pottery classes and new ceramics, competing points are weighed, and the conclusion is fully supported by the evaluation.

Some marks4/6

Email is good because class booking details can be sent privately to each customer, and it is cheap to send the same message to lots of people. However, emails can go into junk folders so some customers will not see class dates. Social media is good because posts can be shared so more people hear about the pottery classes, and the studio can put up photos of new ceramics. But negative comments are public and could damage the studio's reputation. I think the studio should use social media because it will reach more people, but it should also email customers who have booked.

Why: Level 2: relevant points for both platforms (private and cheap email, junk folders, shared posts, photos, negative comments) with brief links to the pottery, but the evaluation is not developed in detail and the conclusion is only partially supported.

Some marks1/6

Email is good because it is a communication platform. Social media is also good because it is popular. I think the studio should use email because it is the best way to communicate with customers.

Why: Level 1: generic assertions with no development, almost nothing tied to the pottery classes or new ceramics, and the conclusion is stated without support.
