Blurring of Social and Business Boundaries

Influencers and paid promotions

An influencer, or paid content creator, is someone with a social media following who is paid to promote products or services. This is called paid promotion. The creator gains money or free products, while the business reaches a large audience.

Why both sides agree

The creator is paid a fee, or sometimes given free products, to feature a business in their posts. In return, the business reaches the creator's followers more quickly and widely than it could through its own account. For example, a small climbing gym pays a local climber with 30,000 followers to show its new bouldering wall in a short video. Many viewers already watch his clips and value his opinion, so the gym becomes known to people who have never visited.

Brand awareness and trust

This builds brand awareness: more people recognise the business and what it sells. It can also build trust, because followers already listen to that creator. A recommendation from someone they choose to follow can feel more believable than a company advertising itself. That trust depends on the promotion being honest; if you follow a creator and feel tricked, the creator's reputation and the business's image can suffer.

Advertising must be acknowledged

Some platforms require paid promotions to be clearly acknowledged as advertising. The creator might add a paid partnership label or state that the post is an advert. This tells followers that money or gifts were involved, so they can judge the recommendation fairly. It also makes the boundary between a personal post and business content visible: the same friendly video has become commercial promotion.
