1State / Give two2 marks

Pentreath Balloon Flights is a company that runs hot air balloon flights. Customers book their flights and pay online. The company's computer system has been affected by a security breach.

State two ways a security breach could cause financial loss for the company.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for each correct way, up to a maximum of two marks from:

  • Paying a ransom to the attackers
  • Fines/penalties/being sued/legal costs
  • Repairing or replacing systems/paying IT specialists to fix them
  • Lost income from cancelled flights/fewer bookings/lost sales
  • Refunds/compensation paid to customers
  • Cost of improving security after the breach
  • Cost of advertising to repair the company's reputation
  • Paying staff while the systems cannot be used

Do not accept: other impacts such as downtime or damage to public image, or causes of a breach such as malware or hacking – these are not ways the company could lose money

Accept any other appropriate response.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Paying a ransom to the attackers and paying IT specialists to repair the systems.

Why: Paying a ransom (1) and paying IT specialists to repair the systems (1): two different ways the company could lose money.

Some marks1/2

They might have to pay a ransom to get their data back and their website could be down for a week.

Why: Paying a ransom is a correct way of losing money (1); the website being down is downtime, another impact, not a way of losing money (0).

No marks0/2

Staff could open a phishing email and install malware on the system.

Why: These are causes of a breach, not ways the company could lose money, so no credit.

2State / Give two2 marks

Cawston Wedding Films is a company that films weddings. It stores videos and customer details on its computer system. The company has recently had a security breach.

State two ways a security breach could damage the company's public image.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for each correct way, up to a maximum of two marks from:

  • Customers post negative reviews/complaints online
  • Customers share their bad experiences on social media
  • Bad word of mouth/poor recommendations to other people
  • News/media reports about the breach
  • The company is seen as careless/unprofessional
  • The company is seen as unreliable
  • The company is seen as untrustworthy/customers lose trust in it

Do not accept: other impacts of the breach such as loss of customers or financial loss – these are impacts on the company, not ways its public image is damaged

Accept any other appropriate response.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Customers might post negative reviews online and a news website could report the breach.

Why: Negative reviews (1) and news reports about the breach (1): two ways the company's public image could be damaged.

Some marks1/2

Customers might post negative reviews online.

Why: Negative reviews online is one correct way (1); no second way is given.

No marks0/2

The company could lose customers and money.

Why: Loss of customers and financial loss are other impacts of the breach, not ways the public image is damaged, so no credit.

3State / Give two2 marks

Kestrelfield Mountain Rescue is a volunteer rescue team. It stores personal data about its volunteers and the people it rescues. A security breach could cause financial loss.

State two other examples of financial loss a security breach could cause the rescue team.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for each correct example of financial loss, up to a maximum of two marks from:

  • Fines/penalties
  • Compensation payments to affected people
  • Cost of repairing/replacing computer systems/hiring security specialists/paying staff overtime to fix the breach
  • Ransom payment
  • Lost donations/income
  • Legal fees/cost of legal action
  • Money stolen from the rescue team's bank account/theft of funds

Do not accept: financial loss as it is the example given

Allow: a ransom payment as an example of financial loss

Allow: fines and legal fees as two separate examples

Accept any other appropriate response.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Paying a fine and the cost of repairing its computer systems.

Why: A fine (1) and repair costs (1): two different examples of financial loss.

Some marks1/2

Paying legal fees.

Why: Legal fees is one correct example (1); no second example is given.

No marks0/2

The rescue team could suffer financial loss.

Why: This repeats the example in the stem and does not give an example of financial loss, so no credit.

4Explain one2 marks

Hartswood Riding School is a riding school that teaches children and adults to ride horses. It stores clients' contact details in an online booking system. A security breach has exposed some of these details.

Explain one way a security breach could damage the riding school's public image.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for the correct way and one mark for a justification for that way, up to a maximum of two marks.

  • Clients lose trust in the riding school (1) because their personal details were exposed, so they may stop booking lessons (1)
  • The riding school gets a reputation for being careless with data (1) as parents may not want to send their children there (1)
  • Negative comments about the riding school are posted on social media (1) which can be seen by people looking for a riding school to join (1)
  • Existing clients tell others not to use the riding school (1) so fewer people recommend it (1)
  • News of the breach is reported in the local paper/school newsletter (1) which makes the riding school look unreliable to new clients (1)

Allow: loss of trust/loss of reputation on its own, as these count as damage to public image, for the first mark only

Do not accept: financial loss as this is a different impact, not damage to public image

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Clients may lose trust in the riding school because their personal details were exposed, so they could stop booking lessons and tell others not to use it.

Why: Gives a way public image is damaged (loss of trust) (1) and justifies it with the effect on bookings/recommendations (1).

Some marks1/2

It could damage the riding school's reputation.

Why: Names damage to reputation, which the scheme allows as the way (1), but gives no justification (0).

No marks0/2

The riding school might have to pay a fine.

Why: Gives financial loss, which the scheme does not accept, as it is a different impact, not damage to public image (0).

5Explain one2 marks

Hobmoor Food Wholesalers supplies fruit and vegetables to restaurants. Staff take orders and record stock on the company's computer system, which has been affected by a security breach.

Explain one way a security breach could reduce productivity for the company.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for a correct way and one mark for an expansion of that way, up to a maximum of two marks.

  • Staff cannot use the ordering system/is locked out (1) so orders cannot be processed until the system is back (1)
  • Lost data has to be recovered/re-entered (1) which takes staff time away from taking orders (1)
  • Staff have to spend time resetting/changing passwords (1) so they get less of their normal work done (1)
  • Staff have to deal with customers asking about the breach (1) which stops them processing orders and stock records (1)
  • Staff have to work with IT to investigate the breach (1) so they cannot carry out their usual tasks (1)
  • Files/records are deleted (1) so staff have to recreate them before they can carry on (1)

Allow mix and match if it makes sense

Do not accept: answers about financial loss or damage to reputation, as these are different impacts.

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Staff may have to re-enter orders and stock records that were lost which takes time they would otherwise spend taking new orders.

Why: Gives a way productivity falls, lost data having to be re-entered (1), and expands it by saying it uses time needed for taking orders (1).

Some marks1/2

Staff may have to spend time resetting their passwords.

Why: Gives a correct way, staff spending time resetting passwords (1), but gives no expansion of how this reduces productivity (0).

No marks0/2

The company might be fined by the ICO, which will cost it a lot of money.

Why: Describes financial loss, a different impact from reduced productivity, which the mark scheme does not accept (0).

6Explain one2 marks

Hollinswood Bakery is a bakery that makes bread and cakes and takes customer orders online. A security breach has stopped the bakery from using its online ordering system.

Explain one way a security breach could reduce productivity for the bakery.

[2 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for a correct way and one mark for an expansion of that way, up to a maximum of two marks.

  • Staff have to do tasks manually/by hand (1) which takes longer than using the computer system (1)
  • Staff are locked out of their accounts/cannot log in (1) so cannot work on current tasks until access is restored (1)
  • Time is spent recovering data/resetting passwords (1) instead of doing their normal work (1)
  • Staff have to help fix/investigate the breach (1) so fewer staff are working on orders/production (1)
  • Work that was lost has to be redone (1) which delays other jobs/tasks (1)

Allow mix and match if it makes sense

Do not accept: legal action/financial loss as these are other impacts, not a reduction in productivity

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks2/2

Staff may have to take orders by hand instead of using the ordering system, so it takes longer to process each customer's order.

Why: Gives a way productivity is reduced (doing tasks manually) (1) and expands it with the effect of taking longer (1).

Some marks1/2

Staff have to spend time resetting their passwords.

Why: Names a way staff time is taken up (1) but gives no expansion of how this reduces productivity (0).

No marks0/2

The bakery could be fined by the ICO.

Why: Gives legal action, which is a different impact, not a reduction in productivity (0).

7Explain one3 marks

Fenwick Bike Repairs is a bicycle repair workshop. The company stores customer bookings and payment details on its computer system. A security breach has meant that some of this data has been accessed.

Explain one way the breach could cause financial loss for the company.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for a correct way, one mark for a justification for that way and one mark for an expansion of the justification, up to a maximum of three marks.

  • Pay a ransom (1) because the attackers could lock the company's files (1) so the company cannot get its bookings back until it pays (1)
  • Pay IT specialists to repair systems or recover data (1) because the breach may have damaged files or software (1) so less money is available to run the workshop (1)
  • Lose income from bookings (1) because customers may cancel or go to another workshop after the breach (1) so the company earns less than it expected (1)
  • Pay compensation or refunds to customers (1) because their payment details were accessed (1) which costs the company money (1)
  • Pay staff overtime to fix the breach or recover data (1) because normal repairs are delayed (1) which adds to wage costs (1)

Allow: any appropriate expansion of the justification, such as lost business or having to spend money on repairs

Do not allow mix and match

Do not accept: 'loss of money' on its own; damage to public image or loss of data, as these are other impacts, not financial loss

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

The company may have to pay a ransom because the attackers could lock its booking system so it cannot take any bookings until it pays.

Why: Way (1), justification (1) and expansion (1) are linked.

Some marks2/3

The company may need to pay someone to repair the systems because the breach may have damaged its software.

Why: Way (1) and justification (1), but no expansion of the justification.

No marks0/3

The company's reputation will be damaged because customers will not trust it after the breach, so it will lose money.

Why: Damage to public image is a different impact from financial loss, and 'lose money' on its own is not creditworthy.

8Explain one3 marks

Farlow Glass Studio designs and makes stained glass windows for homes and churches. Its staff use a shared computer system to store designs and process customer orders. A hacker has broken into the company's computer system.

Explain one way the breach could reduce the company's productivity.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for a correct way, one mark for a justification for that way and one mark for an expansion of the justification, up to a maximum of three marks.

  • Staff cannot access files or the computer system (1) while the breach is investigated and fixed (1) so no designs or orders can be worked on (1)
  • Staff have to reset their passwords (1) because the breach may have exposed them (1) which takes time away from their normal work (1)
  • Data has to be recovered from backups (1) so staff have to re-enter the orders that were lost (1) which delays the windows being finished (1)
  • Staff are asked to help investigate the breach (1) because they know how the system is normally used (1) which means they are not making any windows (1)
  • Staff cannot use email or the shared network (1) so they cannot share designs with colleagues (1) which means each job takes longer to complete (1)

The expansion must add to the justification, e.g. saying how work is delayed, not just repeat it

Allow mix and match if the whole response makes sense

Do not accept ‘the company will lose money’/any reference to financial loss

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

Staff will have to spend time changing their passwords because the breach may have exposed them, so they cannot work on orders during that time.

Why: Way (1), justification (1) and expansion (1) are linked, with the expansion saying how time is lost.

Some marks2/3

Data has to be recovered from backups so staff have to re-enter the orders that were lost.

Why: Way (1) and justification (1), but no expansion of the justification.

No marks0/3

The company will lose money so staff will be less productive.

Why: Financial loss is a different impact and the answer does not say how the breach reduces productivity.

9Explain one3 marks

Fernhill Open-Air Cinema shows films to the public on an outdoor screen. Customers book tickets on the company's website, which runs on its server. A security breach has been found on the server.

Explain one way the breach could cause downtime for the cinema.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for a correct way, one mark for a justification for that way and one mark for an expansion of the justification, up to a maximum of three marks.

  • The server is taken offline (1) so the breach can be investigated (1) which means no tickets can be bought on the website (1)
  • Data is restored from backups (1) because files may have been changed by the breach (1) so online booking stops while this is done (1)
  • Malware is removed from the ticket system (1) so the system has to be shut down (1) and staff cannot check customers' bookings when they arrive (1)
  • Passwords/security settings are changed (1) after the breach (1) so staff cannot use the system until this is complete (1)

Award the justification mark only where it explains why the breach makes the server/system unavailable (to investigate, repair or restore), not just that it is being fixed.

Allow mix and match if it makes sense.

Do not accept: other impacts such as loss of customers/financial loss, as they do not explain how downtime is caused.

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

The server is shut down so that the breach can be investigated, which means the cinema cannot sell tickets on its website.

Why: Way (1), justification (1) and expansion (1) are linked.

Some marks1/3

The website may be offline while it is fixed.

Why: Way (1) only; 'while it is fixed' does not say why the breach makes the site unavailable, so the justification mark is not awarded.

No marks0/3

The cinema will lose customers because it has downtime.

Why: Loss of customers is a different impact and does not explain how downtime is caused.

10Describe3 marks

Dunmarsh Karting Centre is a go-kart track where customers book their races online. A security breach has been found on the centre's computer system.

Describe how downtime could affect Dunmarsh Karting Centre.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

A description of how downtime could affect the company. To include three from

  • The centre has to shut down/take its systems offline (1) while the breach is investigated/fixed (1)
  • Staff cannot use the booking system (1) so no new bookings/races can be taken (1)
  • Customers are turned away/book with another track (1) so the centre loses income/sales (1)
  • Staff have no work to do while the systems are down (1) so productivity falls (1)

Do not accept: other impacts of a security breach, such as damage to public image or legal action, that are not caused by the downtime

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

The centre has to shut down its systems while the breach is investigated and fixed. Staff cannot use the booking system, so no new races can be booked. Customers then go to another track, so the centre loses income.

Why: Systems shut down (1) while the breach is investigated/fixed (1), booking system unusable (1) and no new bookings (1): more than three creditworthy steps, so capped at 3.

Some marks2/3

Staff cannot use the booking system so they cannot take bookings for the weekend.

Why: Both steps of the booking chain: staff cannot use the booking system (1) so no new bookings can be taken (1); no second distinct impact, so 2 of 3.

No marks0/3

The centre's public image is damaged so customers stop booking races.

Why: Damage to public image is a different impact from downtime and is excluded by the Do not accept line, so no creditworthy point is given.

11Describe3 marks

Lindfield Skip Hire is a company that hires out skips for household waste. It stores customer names, addresses and card details on its computer system. The company has had a security breach and some of this data has been leaked.

Describe how this security breach could lead to legal action against the company.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

A description of how a security breach could lead to legal action. To include three from

  • The company has not kept customers' personal data secure (1) which breaks data protection law (GDPR/DPA) (1) so it can be taken to court (1)
  • A customer whose data was leaked can sue the company (1) and claim compensation (1)
  • The ICO can investigate the breach (1) and fine the company/take it to court (1)

Do not accept: how the breach happened, e.g. a hacker or a phishing email, as this is not legal action

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

The company has not kept its customers' card details secure, which breaks data protection law, so it can be taken to court.

Why: Three linked steps of one chain: failing to keep the data secure (1), breaking data protection law (1) and being taken to court (1).

Some marks2/3

A customer whose details were leaked could sue the company and it would have to pay them compensation.

Why: Both steps of the suing and compensation chain (1 and 1), but no third point from another chain.

No marks0/3

A hacker could get into the system using a phishing email.

Why: Describes how the breach happened, which the mark scheme says is not accepted, so no marks.

12Describe3 marks

Dunscar Cave Tours is a company that runs guided tours of underground caves. Customers book tours online and the company stores their booking details on its computer system. A hacker has deleted the company's booking database.

Describe how data loss could affect Dunscar Cave Tours.

[3 marks]
Mark scheme

A description of how data loss could affect the company. To include three from

  • Customer booking/personal details are lost/deleted (1) so the company cannot access them when it needs them (1)
  • Staff have to re-enter/recreate the lost records (1) which takes time/reduces productivity (1)
  • The company cannot contact customers about their bookings (1) so it loses bookings/income (1)
  • Customers may lose trust in the company (1) which damages its public image/loses future bookings (1)

Do not accept: other impacts of a security breach that are not caused by the data loss, such as downtime

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing.

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks3/3

The company's booking records have been deleted so staff can no longer access the details of who has booked a tour. Staff will have to type in the lost records again from confirmation emails, which takes time and reduces their productivity. Customers may also lose trust in the company, which damages its public image.

Why: Three chains clearly met: records lost and cannot be accessed (1 and 1), re-entering records taking time and reducing productivity (1 and 1), and loss of trust damaging public image (1 and 1); six creditworthy points, so capped at 3.

Some marks2/3

The company cannot contact customers about their tours so it will lose bookings and income.

Why: Both steps of the 'cannot contact customers' chain (1 and 1), but nothing from another chain.

No marks0/3

The company's website will go down so it cannot take any new bookings.

Why: This describes downtime, which the mark scheme says is not accepted because it is not caused by the data loss, so no marks.

13Explain two4 marks

Hurstfield Stained Glass Studio designs and makes glass panels for churches and hotels. Its designers use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create every panel before it is made.

Explain two ways a security breach could reduce productivity at the company.

[4 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for each correct way and one mark for a justification of each way, up to a maximum of four marks.

  • Staff are locked out of their accounts (1) so they cannot open their design files / carry on with their work until access is restored (1)
  • Staff have to restore data that was lost (1) so time is spent recovering files instead of designing new panels (1)
  • Design files are damaged and have to be made again (1) which takes time they would have spent on new orders (1)
  • New security measures, such as a second login step, are added (1) so everyday tasks take longer to complete (1)
  • Staff have to change their passwords and have their devices checked (1) so they are away from their design work while this is done (1)
  • Staff have to be retrained on security (1) so they cannot work while they attend the training (1)

Allow justifications that only imply time being lost, e.g. 'so the files have to be made again' or 'so work stops until access is restored', as long as the link to reduced productivity is clear

Do not accept impacts that are not a reduction in productivity, such as financial loss or legal action, even if they are justified

Allow mix and match if the response makes sense

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks4/4

Staff may be locked out of their accounts so they cannot open their design files until access is restored. Staff may also have to restore data that was lost, so they spend time recovering files instead of designing new panels.

Why: Two ways each with a justification: locked accounts (1) plus being unable to open design files (1), and restoring lost data (1) plus time spent instead of designing (1).

Some marks2/4

The design files might be damaged so staff have to make them again. The company might have to pay for repairs to its computers.

Why: One way with its justification: damaged files (1) and making them again, which implies time lost (1). Paying for repairs is financial loss, not reduced productivity, so earns nothing.

No marks0/4

The company will have to pay a fine and this will cost the business money.

Why: Financial loss is a different impact and the mark scheme does not accept it, even justified, because nothing shows how productivity is reduced.

14Explain two4 marks

Hendra Dairy Farm supplies milk to shops across the county. Staff use an online system to record which cows have been milked, treatments given to cows and milk orders from shops; a security breach has caused this system to go down.

Explain two ways downtime could affect the farm.

[4 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for each correct way and one mark for a justification of each way, up to a maximum of four marks.

  • Milk orders cannot be processed (1) so deliveries to shops are missed/late (1)
  • The farm cannot take new orders from shops (1) so those shops may buy from another dairy/go to a competitor (1)
  • Staff cannot check which cows have been milked (1) so they have to keep paper records and update the system later (1)
  • Staff cannot check the treatments given to cows (1) so it takes longer to work out which milk can be sold (1)
  • The farm cannot send invoices to the shops it supplies (1) so it is paid late/cash flow suffers (1)
  • Staff cannot do their usual jobs (1) so the work has to be done later and they fall behind (1)

Allow 'lose money/lose income/lose sales' as a justification of not being able to process milk orders or take new orders

Do not accept other impacts of a security breach, such as data loss or damage to public image, as these do not explain how downtime affects the farm

Allow mix and match if the response makes sense

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks4/4

Milk orders cannot be processed so deliveries to shops are missed. Staff cannot check which cows have been milked so they have to keep paper records and update the system later.

Why: Two ways each with a justification: orders not processed (1) leading to missed deliveries (1), and milking records unavailable (1) leading to paper records (1).

Some marks2/4

The farm cannot process its orders so it will lose money. The computers will be offline.

Why: One way with its justification: orders cannot be processed (1) and money is lost (1, allowed as a justification of this point). 'Computers offline' just repeats downtime, which is in the stem, so earns nothing.

No marks0/4

The farm could lose all of its data and its public image will be damaged.

Why: Both are other impacts of a security breach, not ways downtime affects the farm, and neither is justified.

15Explain two4 marks

Hethersett Manor is a wedding venue. It stores the contact and payment details of every couple who books the venue.

Explain two reasons why the venue could face legal action after a security breach.

[4 marks]
Mark scheme

Award one mark for each correct reason and one mark for a justification of each reason, up to a maximum of four marks.

  • The venue did not keep the couples' personal data secure (1) so the couples could take the venue to court/sue the venue (1)
  • The venue did not comply with the GDPR/Data Protection Act (1) so the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) could fine the venue (1)
  • The breach caused the couples stress/worry (1) so they could take the venue to court/claim compensation (1)
  • The couples lost money because of the breach (1) so they could sue the venue to get their money back (1)
  • The venue did not follow its own security policy, e.g. staff shared passwords (1) so the venue could be held responsible and sued (1)

Do not accept other impacts of a breach, such as damage to public image or loss of bookings, as these are not legal action

Allow 'fined' or 'sued' on its own only where the response also gives a reason for it

Allow mix and match if the response makes sense

Accept any other appropriate wording/phrasing

Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks4/4

The venue may not have kept the couples' data secure so the couples could take it to court. It may also have broken the GDPR so the Information Commissioner's Office could fine the venue.

Why: Two reasons each justified: data not kept secure (1) leading to couples taking the venue to court (1), and GDPR not complied with (1) leading to an ICO fine (1).

Some marks2/4

The venue did not keep the couples' data safe so it could be taken to court. It could also get a bad reputation.

Why: One reason with a justification: data not kept safe (1) so it could be taken to court (1). Bad reputation is damage to public image, not legal action, so it is not credited.

No marks0/4

The venue will lose bookings as couples will see the bad reviews.

Why: Loss of bookings and bad reviews are damage to public image, which the mark scheme does not accept as legal action, so nothing is credited.

16Discuss6 marks

Otterbourne Marina rents moorings to boat owners. It stores digital records of its berth holders' contact details, payments and boat insurance. A security breach has caused some of these records to be lost.

Discuss the impact of data loss on Otterbourne Marina and its berth holders.

[6 marks]
Mark scheme

Responses will be credited according to the learner's demonstration of knowledge and understanding of the material, using the indicative content and level descriptors below.

The indicative content that follows is not prescriptive. Responses may cover some or all indicative content, but learners should be rewarded for other responses.

Discussion may consider

Company impacts

  • Lost contact records – staff cannot send invoices or renewals to berth holders
  • Lost payment records – the marina cannot prove who has paid, so mooring fees are lost
  • Reduced productivity – staff rebuild records from paper files instead of doing their normal work
  • Damage to public image – boat owners hear the records were lost and take their moorings elsewhere

Berth holder impacts

  • Stress – berth holders worry their payment details could be misused by someone else
  • Time and effort – berth holders have to give their contact and insurance details to the marina again
  • Missed notices – berth holders get no invoices or safety information if their details are gone
  • Loss of trust – berth holders move their boats to another marina

Accept any other relevant response

Levels

  • Level 0 (0 marks): No rewardable content
  • Level 1 (1–2 marks): Demonstrates isolated elements of knowledge and understanding; there will be major gaps or omissions; Few of the points made will be relevant to the context in the question; Limited discussion which contains generic assertions rather than considering different aspects and the relationship between them
  • Level 2 (3–4 marks): Demonstrates some accurate knowledge and understanding; with only minor gaps or omissions; Some of the points made will be relevant to the context in the question, but the link will not always be clear; Displays a partially developed discussion which considers some different aspects and some consideration of how they interrelate, but not always in a sustained way
  • Level 3 (5–6 marks): Demonstrates mostly accurate and thorough/detailed knowledge and understanding; Most of the points made will be relevant to the context in the question, and there will be clear links; Displays a well-developed and logical discussion which clearly considers a range of different aspects and considers how they interrelate, in a sustained way
Example answers and how they were marked
Full marks6/6

Losing records would cause serious problems for Otterbourne Marina. If contact details and mooring records are lost, staff cannot send invoices or renewals, so some mooring fees may never be collected and the marina loses income. Staff would then have to rebuild the records from paper files and by ringing boat owners, which takes days and reduces productivity while normal work is delayed. Berth holders would be stressed, worried that their payment details could be misused, and would have to send in their insurance documents again, which takes time and effort for them. Because the marina cannot answer their questions quickly, some berth holders may lose trust and move their boats to another marina, which damages the marina's public image and costs it more income.

Why: Most points are clearly linked to a marina and its berth holders, and several impacts on the company and on berth holders (lost fees, reduced productivity, stress, time and effort, loss of trust leading to lost income and image damage) are developed and linked to each other, meeting all Level 3 descriptors.

Some marks4/6

Data loss means the marina no longer has its berth holders' contact and payment records. Staff could not send out invoices or renewal letters, so the mooring fees might not be collected and the marina would lose income. Staff would also have to rebuild the records by ringing the boat owners, which takes time and reduces productivity. The berth holders would be stressed about what had happened to their details.

Why: Accurate and relevant points about the company and its berth holders, with two company impacts explained, but the berth holder point is only asserted and the links between the two groups are not developed, so it is a partially developed discussion at the top of Level 2.

Some marks2/6

Data loss means the marina cannot take card payments any more, so it will lose money. The berth holders will be worried about it.

Why: Two isolated and mostly generic relevant points (income lost and berth holders worried), with no discussion of how they interrelate and a shaky link from data loss to taking payments, so it is Level 1.
