Asset Logs
Many production roles rely on an asset log. Designers, editors and photographers use it to find and organise assets, while production managers use it to check that assets can be used legally.
| User | How they use the asset log |
|---|---|
| Graphic designers | Find the right images and graphics for a layout, and organise which ones go where. |
| Illustrators | Check which illustrations are needed and where each one will be placed. |
| Photographers | See which photographs have been supplied and where each image is used. |
| Video editors | Locate footage for a sequence and keep track of the clips they need. |
| Sound editors | Find music and sound effects and check which ones are available for the project. |
| Editors of books, magazines and newspapers | Track all the assets in a page or section so nothing is missed. |
Production managers use the asset log to check that the necessary licence or permission has been obtained for every asset and that each one can legally be used. For example, before a photograph of students at a school sports day is published on the school website, the production manager checks that signed consent forms are on file and that the picture is allowed to be used. If an asset has no licence or permission, the manager can stop it being used. This protects the company from legal problems and makes sure no one uses another person's work without permission.
