Two New Activities: Calculations and Code Quiz

Calculations and Code Quiz: a binary to hex question answered CA with its working, and a for loop question answered 10

Two new activity types have joined the site, and quizzes have had a rebuild to go with them.

Calculations

Some topics just need practice with numbers. Calculations gives pupils a question, a box to type their answer in, and an instant check.

  • Typed, not picked. There are no options to guess from, so pupils have to work the answer out.
  • The box knows what it wants. A hex question asks for hex, and a money question puts the £ sign beside the box, so pupils only type the number.
  • Worked solutions. Get one wrong and the working opens straight away, step by step, so pupils can see where they went wrong.

It's live now for Edexcel GCSE Computer Science (binary and hex conversions, binary addition, binary shifts and negative binary) and Edexcel GCSE Business (revenue, costs, profit and cash flow).

A pupil types answers to binary to hexadecimal questions, gets two right, then gets one wrong and sees the worked solution

Code Quiz

Reading code is a skill of its own, and it comes up again and again on the exam papers. Questions with a program in them now have their own activity, Code Quiz, so you can set them on their own.

  • Over 600 questions across OCR GCSE, Edexcel GCSE and KS3 Computing.
  • The kinds of question the papers ask: what does this print, which line has the error, which line completes the program, what is this structure called.
  • Code shown properly, in a code box with its indentation kept.

Quizzes, one question at a time

Quizzes, Code Quiz included, now show one question at a time instead of one long page.

  • Instant feedback. Pupils see straight away whether they were right, with the right answer in green.
  • An explanation with each answer, right or wrong, so the quiz teaches as well as tests.
  • "I don't know – show me". Better than a guess: pupils see the answer and why, and you can see what they didn't know.
  • A progress bar fills in green and red as they go.

A wrong answer in red, the right answer in green, and an explanation underneath

Carry on where you left off

The bell goes halfway through a quiz? No problem: answers are saved as pupils go.

  • Assigned activities pick up where pupils left off, automatically and on any device, until they finish.
  • Practice asks whether to carry on or start again.

Try them

Both new activities sit with the others on each subtopic's Activities page, and you set them from Assign Activity in the usual way. As always, let me know what you'd like to see next.
