Conditional formatting changes how a cell looks automatically, based on the ______ held in that cell, such as a number or a word. It highlights only the cells that match the ______, or conditions, that we write, for example turning every Pass cell green. It helps you spot ______ and pick out particular values.
The first step is to ______ the data you want to format, which could be one cell, a whole column or several cells. Open the ______ and choose Conditional formatting, then pick the type of rule you need. Choose the formatting ______, such as the fill colour, then click ______ to apply the rule. To add more rules to the same cells, use Add another rule.
The ______ rule formats any cell that includes a given word. It is not ______, so a rule for Pass also matches PASS and pass. Formatting ______ automatically when a value changes, and any cell that matches no rule is left ______.
For numbers such as race positions, an Is ______ rule matches only that exact number, while a rule that looks for text would also match 10 or 21. When data falls into groups, such as the houses at a sports day, you add one rule per group to colour each one differently. You can also combine this with drop-down lists and an ______ statement to build a self-marking quiz, where correct answers turn green.
